Pope Leo Draws Huge Paris Crowds for Mass During France Visit
More than 600,000 people registered to attend an outdoor Mass with Pope Leo in Paris on Saturday, making it the largest scheduled event of his four-day visit to France. Crowds began gathering before sunrise along the Champs-Élysées, while police closed nearby streets ahead of the pope’s journey in an open-top popemobile.
During his visit, Pope Leo has spoken about the need for peace and warned that international institutions such as the United Nations and other multilateral organisations are facing a crisis. At UNESCO headquarters in Paris on Friday, he also renewed his concerns about artificial intelligence and its potential impact on humanity.
The pope’s France trip also includes meetings connected to the Catholic Church’s response to clergy abuse scandals. On Sunday, he is scheduled to meet seven abuse survivors in Lourdes. His itinerary includes Paris, Lourdes and Metz, where he is due to address themes including Europe’s future and peace.
