German Court Jails Two Men for Plot to Kill Jewish Leaders Linked to Iran
A German court in Hamburg has sentenced two men to prison for plotting to assassinate a leader of Germany’s Jewish community. One defendant, identified as Danish national Ali S., received eight years and six months for preparing an assassination and aggravated arson. The court said he had been recruited by Iran’s intelligence service to carry out state-sponsored terrorist activities in Germany.
The second defendant, Afghan national Tawab M., was sentenced to four years and six months for his role in the plot. According to the court, Ali S. was instructed in early 2025 to gather information on Josef Schuster, president of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and Volker Beck, chairman of the German-Israeli Society. He was also tasked with monitoring two Jewish grocery store owners in Berlin.
The verdicts, which can be appealed, follow criminal charges brought by German federal prosecutors in May. The case comes amid escalating regional tensions involving Iran and its adversaries. Iran’s embassy in Germany had not immediately responded to a request for comment on the court’s findings.
