Chinese Automakers Target Europe’s Premium Car Market with Advanced Technology
Chinese automakers are expanding their ambitions in Europe, targeting the premium car segment with technology-focused electric vehicles. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, brands such as BYD’s Denza, Changan’s Avatr and Aito showcased vehicles featuring advanced driver-assistance systems, rapid charging and enhanced comfort features. Their strategy centres on offering what they describe as “intelligent luxury” to attract buyers beyond the traditional appeal of established European brands.
The push comes as competition intensifies in China’s domestic automotive market, where vehicle sales fell 20% in the first half of 2026, increasing the need for higher-margin premium models. European luxury brands such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi have long benefited from their heritage and established reputations. Chinese manufacturers are attempting to challenge that advantage through technology-rich vehicles, including Avatr’s premium electric sedan and SUV, expected to start at around €60,000.
Although Chinese premium brands still account for a small share of Europe’s market, their sales are growing rapidly. Zeekr more than tripled its European sales to 9,525 vehicles in the first nine months of 2026, compared with 3,025 a year earlier. The company plans to expand into additional European markets, while Avatr intends to begin its European rollout in Spain, Britain and Denmark in 2027. However, building consumer trust and matching the reputation of established luxury brands remain key challenges for Chinese automakers.
