Pope Leo XIV Diagnosed With Lung Cancer After Successful Surgery

Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma after undergoing successful surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, the Vatican announced. The 71-year-old pontiff underwent a 90-minute procedure at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital on Tuesday, with no complications reported. The Vatican said he woke up normally following the operation and had a peaceful night in hospital.

The Pope had revealed during his weekly prayers at St Peter’s Square that doctors had discovered a lung nodule that was detected at an early stage. Subsequent examinations confirmed it was cancerous. Further tests are being conducted to determine whether the cancer has spread. His schedule has been cleared until October 20 to allow him to recover, and he is expected to remain in hospital for about a week.

The diagnosis has raised concerns among Catholics worldwide, with religious leaders expressing hope for his recovery. Pope Leo is also keen to proceed with a planned Latin American tour in early November, including a visit to Peru, where he previously served as a missionary and bishop. Medical experts note that the outlook for lung adenocarcinoma depends on factors such as the stage at diagnosis and the patient’s overall health.
