Macron Urges Calm as France Faces Major Unrest

French President Emmanuel Macron appealed for calm on October 18, 2026, following widespread unrest across the country that resulted in looting, damaged businesses and clashes with police. The protests, driven by rising living costs and declining public services, escalated into violence in several cities, including Paris and Marseille. More than 500,000 people reportedly participated in demonstrations nationwide, many of which began peacefully.

The unrest caused extensive damage to public buildings and commercial properties. In Limoges, a fire severely damaged the town hall, with its clock tower collapsing in the blaze. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez reported around 2,400 arrests and nearly 1,000 police officers injured. Retailer Carrefour also reported damage to 50 of its stores, including 20 that were looted.

Macron acknowledged public frustration but condemned the violence, distinguishing peaceful protesters from those involved in destruction and looting. He stopped short of declaring a state of emergency but said authorities could restrict demonstrations when necessary to protect public buildings and businesses. With France approaching its 2027 presidential election, the unrest has intensified concerns over social tensions, economic pressures and public confidence in the government.
