Bomb Threat Forces Austrian Airlines Flight from Israel to Make Emergency Landing in Bulgaria
An Austrian Airlines flight travelling from Tel Aviv, Israel, to Vienna, Austria, made an emergency landing in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Sunday night following a reported bomb threat. The Airbus A320 was escorted by a Bulgarian Air Force MiG-29 fighter jet before landing at Vasil Levski Airport. According to Bulgaria’s transport ministry, passengers were evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Austrian Airlines confirmed that a threat had been made, with 51 passengers and six crew members aboard the aircraft. Authorities carried out a security search after the plane diverted over Romania and landed in Sofia, around 30 minutes after the alert was raised. No explosive threat was found, and the flight subsequently continued to Vienna with all passengers on board.
The incident comes amid heightened aviation security concerns following other recent alerts involving commercial flights in Europe and the Middle East. Last month, a passenger reportedly attempted to hijack a Flydubai flight heading to Tel Aviv before the crew and passengers subdued him and the aircraft landed safely in Saudi Arabia. Last week, Croatia and Germany also scrambled fighter jets after a commercial flight from Corfu to Nuremberg accidentally transmitted a hijacking alert. An investigation into the latest incident is underway.
