France Considers Local Curfews After Weekend of Riots and Looting

France’s government has urged local authorities to impose curfews in some areas following a weekend of widespread riots, looting and clashes between protesters and police. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said localised restrictions were currently more appropriate than a nationwide curfew, while leaving open the possibility of declaring a state of emergency. The unrest followed weeks of demonstrations over rising living costs and declining public services.

The violence caused extensive damage to businesses and public property, with the Federation of Trade and Retail reporting that nearly 3,000 shops had been affected. Authorities reported around 2,400 arrests, nearly 1,000 police officers injured and one protester dead after suffering a cardiac arrest. President Emmanuel Macron also rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s offer to resign, instead demanding action to restore order and address intelligence and security failures.

The unrest has intensified pressure on Macron’s government as France approaches its 2027 presidential election and faces economic challenges. Marseille has banned gatherings and demonstrations, while trade unions have called for nationwide strikes and rallies on November 5. The government has also promised support measures for affected businesses, as authorities continue efforts to restore stability across the country.
