Germany and Netherlands are on toxic caterpillar infestations, whose tiny toxic hairs that spreads through wind causes severe allergic reactions and skin irritations in humans and pets.

This year’s mild winter and warm spring provided a good environment for the caterpillars to increase enormously in number. Firefighters, with flame torches and special vacuum cleaners, are trying to destroy nests of the invasive species, across Germany.

Late in July, these caterpillars are expected to turn into pupae and then the threat will be decreased.

The return of the Oak processionary moth caterpillars made the restaurants, swimming pools and schools across Germany to close.

The Western Ruhr region of Germany is a densely populated area and is severely affected by these caterpillars.

These caterpillars, of about 2-3cm (about one inch) are moving towards and spreading on the trees at night time. Specialists said that there will be around 700,000 hairs in a mature caterpillar, which will be spreading severely through winds. These contains an irritating toxin that causes itchy, blistering rashes, which may last for weeks.

Reports said that six people in the western city of Munster had to undergo eye operations to remove the caterpillar hair that got stuck on their corneas.

Amsterdam’s Red Light District is quite famous where prostitutes offers their “services”, from behind a window. These ‘Window displays’ may come to an end soon, as Amsterdam’s mayor Femke Halsema has announced options to radically revamp this Red light district, including closing down brothels in the city centre.

Halsema has been trying to implement new rules in the city’s sex trade in two decades. This includes the banning of sex workers called ‘window workers’, standing in window-fronted rooms.

Halsema said that these new modifications in rules are as a part of protecting sex workers from gawping tourists and to combat a rise in human trafficking.

The prostitution will not be banned completely, she said. To the medias, she said, “I think a lot of the women who work there feel humiliated, laughed at and that’s one of the reasons we are thinking about changing”. The prostitution was legalised by Dutch government in 2000.

Four major modifications will be considered to be implemented. This includes: shutting down of the city centre brothels and shifting them to another place, reducing the number of brothels, ending of window displays and and stepping up the window workers’ licensing.

An EU rule that came into effect on Monday insists all the electric cars to emit voice as the silent feature tends to create more chances for accidents.

This leads the new electric vehicles to feature a noise-emitting device. The rule makers are concerned that the low-emission cars and vans are too quiet that they are not audible to the pedestrians and creates accidents.

As per the rule, all the four wheeler electrical vehicles must be installed with a traditional engine-like device. Avas (a car’s acoustic vehicle alert system) should produce sound during reversing or travelling below 12mph (19km/h).

With out this acoustic system installed, no four-wheeled electric vehicle will be approved for road use from 1st of July 2019.

The European Parliament had been facing pressures from unions like European Blind Union since 2013, for making this rule into action. All the private and commercial vehicles will be coming under this new rule.
