Macron Highlights Europe’s Judeo-Christian Heritage

French President Emmanuel Macron said Europe was built on a “Greco-Roman and Judeo-Christian foundation” during a speech alongside Pope Leo in Metz on Monday. His remarks came during the pope’s four-day visit to France.

Macron said Europe’s heritage helped shape ideas around the individual and freedom, while describing the European Union as a political project based on peace and equality. His comments stood out in France, where the constitution establishes a secular state and debates over religion and national identity remain prominent.

Macron also warned that Europe faces threats from war, social fragmentation and online disinformation. He said digital algorithms can amplify negative emotions and deepen divisions, urging Europeans to resist divisive nationalism and maintain dialogue.
