Rubio to Host Quad Meeting as G20 Foreign Ministers’ Talks Conclude

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is set to host a meeting with the foreign ministers of Australia, India and Japan on Saturday, marking the third gathering of the Indo-Pacific Quad members this year. The meeting comes as preparations continue for a leaders’ summit scheduled to take place in Manila from November 15 to 18, alongside the ASEAN conference. The summit will be the first gathering of Quad leaders since 2024 and the first involving US President Donald Trump.

Following the Quad meeting, Rubio will conclude a two-day gathering of G20 foreign ministers in Atlanta, where discussions have focused on global economic and geopolitical challenges. Speaking at a reception on Friday, Rubio urged member nations to cooperate despite differences in their national interests. However, the meeting exposed deep divisions over the ongoing wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, with the traditional group photograph cancelled after some European representatives refused to appear alongside Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.

Rubio expressed hope that the discussions would help prepare the ground for a successful G20 leaders’ summit scheduled for December 14–15 at Trump’s Doral golf resort in Florida. The US Secretary of State is also expected to hold a press conference following Saturday’s meetings. The upcoming Quad summit in Manila is expected to provide an important opportunity for the four countries to strengthen cooperation on shared Indo-Pacific priorities.
