Pope Leo Needs No Further Cancer Treatment After Surgery, Doctors Say

Pope Leo will not require additional cancer treatment following surgery to remove a portion of his right lung, his doctors announced on Wednesday. Final examinations confirmed that he had lung adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer, but the disease remained localized and had not spread.

The 71-year-old pontiff underwent surgery on October 13 to remove the lower lobe of his right lung. According to his lead surgeon, Stefano Margaritora, and personal physician, Luigi Carbone, a subsequent cancer evaluation confirmed that no further therapy was necessary. Pope Leo was discharged from hospital on October 17 and is gradually returning to his regular duties.

Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over whether the Pope will undertake his planned visit to Uruguay, Argentina and Peru from November 6 to 17. Although his surgeon said there were no medical reasons preventing the trip, Vatican officials have suggested that his schedule may need adjustments to support his recovery.
