Germany Economy May Grow 1% in 2026
Germany’s economy could expand by around 1% in 2026, nearly twice the 0.5% growth forecast by the Bundesbank in June, President Joachim Nagel said. He pointed to stronger-than-expected export demand and increased government spending as key drivers behind the economy’s resilience after three years of stagnation.
The German government’s debt-financed spending package, focused on defence, infrastructure and climate protection, is also supporting economic activity. Nagel said Germany is experiencing a cyclical upswing, although its longer-term growth potential remains weak. Stronger foreign demand has also contributed to the improved outlook.
Germany’s stronger performance has helped lift expectations for the wider euro zone, with forecasts now pointing to growth at or above 1% this year. However, stronger growth could also add to inflationary pressures. With inflation already close to twice the European Central Bank’s 2% target, further price increases could complicate the ECB’s interest-rate decisions.
