UK PM Seeks EU Trade Deal as Brexit Debate Returns

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said he hopes to secure a deal to improve trade relations with the European Union at a summit scheduled for November 20. Speaking as Parliament resumed after its recess, Burnham highlighted plans to align food standards, link emissions trading systems and expand opportunities for young people to live, work and study abroad, saying closer cooperation could support Britain’s economic growth.

Burnham also called for a broader discussion about Britain’s long-term relationship with the EU, arguing that maintaining the current arrangement was not enough. His remarks have revived debate over Brexit, nearly a decade after the 2016 referendum in which 52% voted to leave the bloc and 48% voted to remain. Burnham said the British public would ultimately decide on any future changes and cited opinion polls suggesting growing support for closer European ties.

The proposal drew mixed reactions from political leaders. Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch rejected the idea that rejoining the EU would resolve Britain’s problems, describing it as “lazy thinking”, while Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey called for the country to return to full EU membership. Although public opinion has reportedly shifted towards rejoining, support can vary when proposals include financial contributions to the EU budget and adopting the euro.
