Fashion retailer Zara has denied infringing the Jo Malone trademark in a legal dispute brought by cosmetics giant Estee Lauder in the UK High Court. Zara argued that its collaboration with perfumer Jo Malone follows guidelines previously set by Estee Lauder regarding how her name can be used in marketing. The dispute centers on Zara fragrance descriptions and packaging referencing Malone as the creator and founder of Jo Loves.

Estee Lauder, which bought the Jo Malone fragrance brand and rights to the name in 1999, claims Malone agreed not to use her name commercially in certain fragrance-related contexts. Zara’s UK unit said the wording used on its website and packaging complies with guidance issued by Estee Lauder’s lawyers in 2020, including referring to her as “Jo Malone CBE” and clearly separating her personal identity from the Jo Malone London brand.

The case also raises broader questions about how Malone can refer to herself professionally after selling rights to her name. Malone defended the Zara partnership publicly, saying the collaboration was with her personally and not linked to the Jo Malone London company. Zara also rejected claims that it misled consumers or positioned the perfumes as low-cost imitations, noting the fragrances are sold under Zara branding with prices significantly below Jo Malone London products.

Gucci has drawn criticism after posting AI-generated images to promote its upcoming Milan Fashion Week show. Users on social media questioned the use of AI in place of human models and photographers, arguing it clashes with the fashion house’s emphasis on creativity and Italian craftsmanship. The images were clearly labeled as “created with AI,” but some called them examples of “AI slop,” highlighting the growing presence of low-quality AI content online.

The AI campaign coincides with Gucci creative director Demna Gvasalia preparing his runway debut in Milan. While not Gucci’s first use of generative AI, the approach has sparked debate about luxury fashion marketing, with some praising its ability to capture “Milano glam,” while others, including photographers like Tati Bruening, warn it risks negative publicity and undermining the creative ecosystem.

Experts note that AI can still play a limited role in fashion, such as retouching, mood boards, or small edits. However, some speculate Gucci may be intentionally provoking discussion on the intersection of luxury fashion and AI, using the campaign to challenge perceptions of what constitutes high-end creativity in the digital era.

Marks & Spencer (M&S) is overhauling its fashion supply chain from “factory to floor” as part of a major strategy to double its annual online fashion, home, and beauty sales to nearly £3 billion ($4 billion). John Lyttle, who took charge as Managing Director for Fashion, Home, and Beauty in March, said the revamp aims to make M&S a fully omnichannel retailer by modernizing how products are sourced, stored, and delivered to customers. The move follows a strong recovery after an April cyberattack that disrupted online operations and caused around £300 million in losses.

The 141-year-old retailer is investing £120 million in automation to improve efficiency and resilience across its operations. Lyttle emphasized that simplifying logistics and strengthening supply chain partnerships—particularly with factories in Asia and Europe—will help reduce costs and ensure smoother product flow. He noted that M&S has already improved its reputation for value, quality, and style, with fashion, home, and beauty sales rising 9% over the past three years and its market share climbing to 10.5%.

M&S plans to deepen long-term supplier relationships to secure consistent product availability amid global trade challenges. The company also aims to increase online’s share of total non-food sales from 34% to 50% in the coming years. Investors see the shift as a major growth opportunity, with experts saying the modernized supply chain could enhance margins and cement M&S’s position as a leading online and in-store fashion retailer in the UK.

Renowned Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli, famous for his vibrant animal prints on leather and textiles, has passed away at the age of 83. The announcement was made by his eponymous fashion house on Instagram, though no further details were provided. According to Italian news agency ANSA, he died at his home in Florence after battling a prolonged illness.

Cavalli, who founded his company in the 1970s, leaves behind a legacy of iconic designs worn by luminaries such as Brigitte Bardot, Sophia Loren, Kim Kardashian, and Jennifer Lopez. Fausto Puglisi, the creative director of Roberto Cavalli, expressed his reverence for the late designer, calling him “a beacon of inspiration for others” and describing working with him as the pinnacle of his career.

Born in Florence on November 15, 1940, Cavalli was renowned for his maximalist approach to fashion, incorporating not only animal prints but also hippie dresses, sand-blasted jeans, and denim patchwork into his collections. He even ventured into designing the Playboy Bunnies’ uniforms, infusing them with his signature leopard print.

When asked about his affinity for animal prints, Cavalli credited nature as his inspiration, marveling at the intricate patterns found in creatures like fish, snakes, and tigers. He regarded God as the ultimate designer and sought to emulate nature’s beauty in his creations.

Giorgio Armani, the founder of Armani, paid tribute to Cavalli’s distinctive style, describing him as a “true artist” whose “Tuscan verve” would be sorely missed. Armani praised Cavalli’s ability to translate fantasy into alluring garments, highlighting his mastery of prints and his boundless creativity.

Elon Musk has stated that he refused Kyiv’s request for access to his Starlink communications network over Crimea to avoid being complicit in what he viewed as a significant act of war. Kyiv had urgently requested to activate Starlink in Sevastopol, a major Russian naval port. This decision came to light following claims in a biography by Walter Isaacson that Musk had deactivated Starlink to thwart a drone attack on Russian ships, which a senior Ukrainian official argued allowed Russian attacks on civilians.

According to the official, Musk’s refusal to allow Ukrainian drones to use Starlink led to Russian naval vessels launching Kalibr missiles at Ukrainian cities. The official questioned why some people were defending Musk’s actions, which he deemed as promoting evil and assisting war criminals.

The controversy emerged alongside the release of Walter Isaacson’s biography, which suggested that Musk had deactivated Starlink in Ukraine due to concerns that an ambush of Russia’s naval fleet in Crimea could trigger a nuclear response from Russia. Ukrainian forces had reportedly targeted Russian ships in Sevastopol with submarine drones carrying explosives, but they lost connection to Starlink, resulting in the drones washing ashore harmlessly. Starlink terminals connect to SpaceX satellites and have played a crucial role in maintaining internet connectivity in Ukraine amid the conflict.

Musk countered the book’s claims by stating that SpaceX had not deactivated anything, as Starlink had not been activated in those regions to begin with. He explained that there was an emergency request from government authorities to activate Starlink all the way to Sevastopol, with the clear intention of sinking most of the Russian fleet at anchor. Musk believed that complying with this request would make SpaceX explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation.

Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former prime minister, supported Musk’s stance, suggesting that Musk was the last reasonable mind in North America if Isaacson’s account was accurate.

In the past, Musk had emphasized that Starlink was not intended for use in wars and had been primarily designed to provide internet access for peaceful purposes, such as education and entertainment. He called for a truce, expressing his belief that Ukrainians and Russians were sacrificing their lives for small pieces of land, which he considered not worth the cost of human lives.

Musk had previously generated controversy by proposing a plan to end the conflict, which included recognizing Crimea as part of Russia and allowing residents of seized regions to vote on their preferred country. This proposal received criticism from figures like Russian chess grandmaster Garry Kasparov, who called it morally flawed.

Famous perfume and clothing designer Paco Rabanne passed away at age 88 in his French home.

The parent business of his brands, Puig, announced his passing and said that he had “marked generations with his bold vision of fashion and his legacy will live on.”

Rabanne’s unusual clothing creations brought him international acclaim. Rabanne’s work, which, in the words of Puig’s fashion president José Manuel Albesa, “made transgression magnetic,” was praised.

Rabanne was hailed as a “important personality in fashion” by Marc Puig, chairman and chief executive officer of Puig, for his “daunting, revolutionary, and provocative perspective, delivered through a unique aesthetic.”

In the Basque area of Spain, not far from the city of San Sebastian, Rabanne was born into a military family. In 1936, during the Spanish Civil War, Gen. Francisco Franco’s nationalist forces assassinated his father, a colonel in the Republican military.

After the Nationalist troops captured Madrid and won the war in 1939, his mother, who had previously worked as a seamstress for fashion designer Cristobal Balenciaga, relocated the family to Paris.

Rabanne was raised in the French capital before enrolling at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts to study architecture, where he also worked as a freelance illustrator.

His innovations permeated every facet of his enterprise. In the middle of the 1990s, he was one of the first scent creators to introduce a product online.
Rabanne withdrew from the fashion industry in 1999, having spent years as one of the leading pioneers in the sector. He hardly appeared in the media for the next 24 years.

The company praised him as a “visionary” and called him “among the most important fashion figures of the 20th Century” in a statement posted on Paco Rabanne’s official Instagram. It said, “His legacy will continue to serve as a source of inspiration.”
