Kherson Experiences Brief Peace During Temporary Ceasefire Amid Fears of Renewed Attacks

The Ukrainian city of Kherson has experienced an unusual period of calm following a temporary ceasefire brokered by the United States. After years of constant Russian aerial attacks, residents have enjoyed two days of relative peace, allowing them to walk through streets, visit shops and cafes, and spend time outdoors without the constant fear of drone strikes. Locals described the city as having finally come back to life after nearly five years of conflict.

However, the temporary ceasefire has also raised concerns about possible military preparations by Russian forces. Ukrainian officials and local sources have alleged that Russia may be using the pause in fighting to move weapons, ammunition and drones into the region and strengthen its military positions. The ceasefire is linked to planned civilian evacuations from Russian-occupied Oleshky, across the Dnipro River, with the operation expected to conclude by Sunday.

Despite the brief relief, Kherson residents fear that attacks could resume once the ceasefire ends. The city’s population has fallen from more than 250,000 to around 65,000 since Russia’s full-scale invasion began. Many buildings remain damaged, and civilian services have been forced underground for safety. For residents, these few peaceful days have offered a glimpse of normal life, but uncertainty remains over what will happen next.
