Paris Suburb Shooting Suspect Admits Targeting Muslims and Africans

A man suspected of carrying out a deadly shooting in the western suburbs of Paris has admitted deliberately targeting people based on their Muslim, African or North African appearance, according to French prosecutors. The attack took place last Friday, killing one person and injuring seven others, including a child. Three victims remained in hospital, with one reported to be in critical condition.

The 39-year-old suspect was charged with murder and attempted murder in connection with a terrorist enterprise. Prosecutors said the attacker chose Trappes and nearby La Verrière because he considered them areas with a significant Islamist presence. The victim who died was identified as Pengo Bossio Wangi, a 26-year-old French-Congolese martial artist. Investigators also found weapons or weapon components, along with several books and political stickers, at the suspect’s home.

French President Emmanuel Macron described the incident as a racist terrorist attack, while anti-racism demonstrations were held across France. The shooting has also sparked political debate over racism and extremist ideologies ahead of the country’s presidential election, scheduled in six months. The suspect has denied having terrorist intentions but reportedly expressed no regret over his actions, according to prosecutors.
