Italy’s Vannacci Gains Mainstream Platform at Elite Business Forum

Former Italian general and far-right politician Roberto Vannacci is set to attend the influential TEHA business forum in Cernobbio, marking a significant step in his growing acceptance within Italy’s political and business establishment. His Futuro Nazionale party has quickly risen to become Italy’s fourth-most-popular political force, according to recent polls.

Vannacci will take part in a panel on the future of European integration alongside former Prime Minister Mario Monti. His appearance has drawn strong criticism from opposition politicians, including Azione leader Carlo Calenda, who said he would boycott the forum and accused Italy’s business elite of pursuing the latest populist figure. TEHA chief Valerio De Molli defended the invitation as an opportunity for dialogue between people with differing views.

Vannacci, known for his hardline positions on immigration, LGBTQ+ rights and citizenship, also opposes sending weapons to Ukraine and supports restoring business ties with Russia. With Italy’s elections due next year, his growing support could pose a challenge to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and her right-wing coalition. Monti said engaging with Vannacci and France’s far-right National Rally leader Jordan Bardella was important because such nationalist forces could potentially enter government.
