Chinese Beauty Brands Expand Into Global Markets

Chinese beauty brands are increasingly expanding into international markets after achieving strong growth at home. Proya Cosmetics, China’s largest beauty brand by revenue, plans to introduce two skincare lines across 400 Ulta Beauty stores in the United States and online from November. The company has also opened a research and development centre in Paris. Other brands, including Florasis, Joocyee and Judydoll, are expanding through overseas stores and international beauty retailers.

Chinese beauty companies are building on their success in the domestic market, where local brands accounted for 57.4% of China’s $159 billion cosmetics market last year, according to industry data. Their products feature innovative formulations, distinctive packaging inspired by traditional Chinese aesthetics and competitive mid-range pricing. The global success of South Korean beauty products has also helped increase international interest in Asian cosmetics, creating opportunities for Chinese brands to attract new customers.

Despite their ambitions, Chinese beauty companies face challenges in building brand awareness and consumer trust in established international markets. Proya aims to become one of the world’s top 10 beauty brands, while some companies are exploring acquisitions to strengthen their portfolios. Geopolitical tensions between China and the United States have also affected expansion plans, prompting brands such as Florasis to reconsider their international strategies. Nevertheless, companies are pursuing long-term global growth by combining Chinese cultural influences with modern beauty innovation.
