Philippine police found 1,500 duct-taped turtles

The Philippine police have found more than 1500 turtles, duct-taped in luggage, at Manila airport (BBC reports). The wrapped turtles were found in four pieces of luggage which were unclaimed. The turtles were packed into boxes and then placed inside boxes.

The police are assuming that the bags were abandoned by the carrier when he found that harsh penalties would be given for illegal wildlife trafficking. The punishment includes two years prison and a fine of about 200,000 pesos. The Bureau of Customs said the turtles were abandoned by a Filipino passenger who was onboard a Philippine Airlines flight from Hong Kong.

The turtles are handed over to Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit. The turtle meat is very costly as it is a form of traditional medicine. The seized turtles valued more than 4.5 million pesos (£60,000; $86,631).

Alabama Tornadoes – At least 23 killed and many got injured

At least 23 including children are dead and many got injured, in apparent large tornado in Alabama that happened on Sunday. The authorities said that the toll could raise. The details regarding how many got injured are not yet been clear. Officials said that they are still on their effort to identify the persons who got killed and injured.

The search efforts are stopped by authorities overnight due to the extremely dangerous weather conditions. Reports says that an among the people killed, an 8-year-old girl in Beauregard is also included. Authorities have blocked off the area.

The Lee County coroner Bill Harris said” We’ve never had a mass fatality situation, that I can remember, like this in my lifetime”.

East Alabama Medical Center, a hospital at Alabama reports that more than 40 injured patients had been admitted in the hospital as a result of the tornado and they expected more.

The tornado killed the people in the Beauregard region in Lee County. This is an area area in the eastern part of the state near the Georgia line, Rita Smith with the Lee County Emergency Management Agency told The Associated Press.

Theresa May given three tests for EU deal, by Brexit supporters

Some Brexit-supporting lawmakers have given UK PM Theresa May three tests for the EU deal, reuters reports says. These supporting lawmakers had rejected May’s European Union exit deal in January.

Theresa May is seeking assurances on the backstop arrangement which are intended to prevent a return to hard border controls between EU member Ireland and British-ruled Northern Ireland.

Concerns over the backstop leads to reject May’s deal in January, with critics saying it could leave the country tied to EU rules indefinitely.

It was reported by Times that a group had drawn up the tests by which they would assess any changes. The group included former Brexit minister Dominic Raab and Nigel Dodds, the deputy leader of the Northern Irish party which props up May’s minority government.

Michael Tomlinson, one of the group, Conservative lawmaker said “The mechanism has got to be legally binding, so effectively treaty-level change”.

“The second part is the language. It can’t be a reinterpretation of the withdrawal agreement or a re-emphasis; it’s got to be really clear language as to where we are going … The third requirement is a clear exit route.”

Trade minister Liam Fox, for BBC said “They have made it very clear that if the effect of any change is to get the guarantees on the Irish backstop that they sought, then that would be sufficient rather than demanding that it has to be done by one mechanism or another”.

Allegations of internet relationship with minor – Ryan Adams cancels UK and Ireland tour

American rock singer David Ryan Adams (44) cancels his tour to UK and Ireland which was scheduled to begin this month, following the allegations that he had an inappropriate relationship over the internet with a teen girl beginning in 2013.

Adams was due to play nine dates in Britain and Ireland in March and April. Ticketmaster, announced on Twitter that the tour got cancelled and refund will be provided to those who purchased the tickets.

“I am not a perfect man and I have made many mistakes. To anyone I have ever hurt, however unintentionally, I apologize deeply and unreservedly.” Adams wrote on Twitter.

Adams is an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer and poet. He is best known for his solo career, during which he has released sixteen albums, and as a former member of rock/alternative country band Whiskeytown, with whom he recorded three studio albums.

A huge rare fish washes up on California beach

A huge strange looking fish washed up in Santa Barbara, California. The fish was about seven-foot (2.1m) length. Scientists are wondering about how the fish made it so far from its home waters. Researchers first thought that it was a similar to species of sunfish.

The fish was spotted at the Coal Oil Point Natural Reserve by intern at the University of California. It was found out that it belongs to a species tht is never seen before in North America. The animal was recognized as hoodwinker sunfish.

Marianne Nyegaard, a marine scientist who discovered the species in 2017 said “When the clear pictures came through, I thought there was no doubt. This is totally a hoodwinker, I couldn’t believe it. I nearly fell out of my chair.”

Scientists says that the saltwater sunfish have mainly 5 species and comes from different places. They are located in tropical waters, subtropics etc. The hoodwinker prefers temperate water as per scientists.

Brazil’s former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who is imprisoned in a federal facility in Paraná’s capital Curitiba was offered a jet to leave prison to attend his grandson’s funeral. His 7 year old grandson died of meningitis on Friday. The funeral is scheduled to happen today in Sao Paulo.

The state government of Parana said that one of its planes will be taking Lula to Sao Paulo, “following a request by the federal police.” A judge still needs to give authorization.

Lulu, on Friday got immense response on Brazilian social medias in favor to his release from jail to attend the funeral. But lawmaker Eduardo Bolsonaro, son of Brazil’s far-right President Jair Bolsonaro, Tweeted that Lula will not be allowed to attend the funeral.

Eduardo said “Lula is just an inmate and he should be at a common prison. When the relatives of other inmates die will they also be escorted by the federal police for the funeral? It is absurd to even contemplate that. It only lets him pose as a poor thing.” It was not sure that whether Lula will be given permission to attend the funeral. But later after several procedures, he was given the permission.

Lula was the former union leader who served as the 35th President of Brazil from 1 January 2003 to 31 December 2010. He was a founding member of the Workers’ Party (PT) and ran unsuccessfully for President three times before achieving victory in the 2002 election, being re-elected in the 2006 election.

The U.S. Treasury Department announced new sanctions against six military leaders who played a role in blocking humanitarian aid to the embattled South American nation. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned the agency’s leader, Manuel Ricardo Cristopher Figuera, and its first commissioner, Hildemaro Jose Rodriguez Mucura.

The Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, in a statement said “We are sanctioning members of Maduro’s security forces in response to the reprehensible violence, tragic deaths, and unconscionable torching of food and medicine destined for sick and starving Venezuelans”.

Steven Mnuchin said that the blockades used to halt stop the aid from entering the country are the recent example of Maduro’s “illegitimate regime weaponizing the delivery of food and critically needed supplies in order to control vulnerable Venezuelans.”

Reuters reports that a representative the U.S. Transportation Department that oversees NHTSA said that “NHTSA’s Crash Investigation Division assigned a Special Crash Investigation team to investigate the crash”, while the NTSB said it is sending a team of three “to conduct a safety investigation”.

Canterbury District’s front-line police on the southern island will be armed until any further notice, as per Reuters reports. Reports says that this action is after three shooting incidents that leads to a debate on whether all police should carry fire arms.

In New Zealand, the police do not carry guns on their general duty. But, hand guns, rifles and tasers will be kept in their vehicles. These weapons should only be used with a supervisor’s permission.

A shootout between one Christchurch resident and police on Tuesday leads to the decision to arm police in the Canterbury district. The man was shot by police and is in hospital in a stable condition, but another suspect in the shooting is still at large and may be armed, said police. The Canterbury District Commander John Price said all police will carry firearms until the man is caught or surrenders.

“Our officers, who are dedicated to keeping our communities safe, are currently operating in an environment of heightened risk and they deserve to be kept safe,” Price told a news conference.

Rolls-Royce said that they had withdrawn from a competition that intends to power Boeing’s planned mid-market aircraft, as per the reuters reports. They took the decision since it could not meet the timetable, as costs related to its Trent 1000 engine resulted in a full-year operating loss of 1.16 billion pounds.

Reports says that Boeing has proposed to launch a new mid-sized jetliner to fill a gap between the narrow and wide-body aircraft. Rolls-Royce said that “We are unable to commit to the proposed timetable to ensure we have a sufficiently mature product which supports Boeing’s ambition for the aircraft,”

The aerospace engineer said that it had increased the charge it had taken on fixing Trent 1000 problems to 790 million pounds from 554 million pounds at the half year. Warren East, the Chief Executive said that the company achieved solid progress despite of all the challenges it faced on Trent 1000 in-service issues.
