Macron Accuses French Far Right of Fueling Racism After Fatal Attack

French President Emmanuel Macron has accused far-right political movements, including Marine Le Pen’s National Rally (RN), of contributing to an atmosphere of racism in France. His remarks follow a racially motivated attack in Trappes, a suburb southwest of Paris, that left one person dead and seven others injured. The incident has intensified political tensions and renewed debate over racism, immigration and public discourse ahead of France’s presidential election next year.

Anti-terrorism prosecutors said the 39-year-old suspect acknowledged seeking victims of African or Muslim backgrounds during questioning. Investigators also reportedly found a copy of Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf and stickers referencing the National Rally among his belongings. The party rejected Macron’s accusations, with RN lawmaker Jean-Philippe Tanguy blaming the president for the spread of hatred during his years in office. Lawyers representing the victim’s family said public statements portraying certain communities as suspicious or illegitimate could contribute to a toxic social climate.

The controversy has widened as politicians and media commentators trade accusations over immigration, racism and recent unrest. Sociologist Solène Brun told Reuters that far-right ideas had spread beyond the National Rally into parts of the government. Meanwhile, the government has faced criticism over its response to racism and far-right attitudes, including debate over comments about the “Great Replacement” conspiracy theory. Authorities have also reported far-right activists seeking confrontations with protesters in more than a dozen French cities.
