France, Britain Discuss Ending ‘One In, One Out’ Migrant Deal

France and Britain are discussing the withdrawal of a migration agreement that allows Britain to return some undocumented migrants arriving by small boats to France, a French interior ministry source said on Wednesday. The arrangement was introduced last year as part of efforts to reduce crossings of the English Channel.

Under the deal, Britain returns eligible undocumented arrivals to France while accepting an equivalent number of asylum seekers with family connections in Britain. The agreement set a target of transferring people within three months of their arrival, while returns to France were expected to take place within 14 days.

France’s interior ministry did not immediately explain why it was seeking to end the agreement, while Britain’s interior ministry did not respond to a request for comment. The deal excludes certain people, including unaccompanied minors and individuals considered a pre-existing security threat.
