In the early hours of the morning in Ede, Netherlands, a concerning situation unfolded at Café Petticoat. A man entered the establishment, reportedly threatening to detonate explosives strapped to himself. In response, armed police swiftly evacuated the surrounding area. However, authorities emphasized that there was no immediate indication of a terrorist motive behind the incident.

Despite evacuation efforts, the situation remained unresolved. Initially, three individuals were released from the nightclub, but the standoff continued. Mayor René Verhulst stressed the importance of respecting the privacy and tranquility of the freed hostages. He urged the public to refrain from sharing any videos or images from the scene.

As a precautionary measure, approximately 150 nearby residences were evacuated, and access to the town center was restricted. Specialized police units, including those trained to handle explosives, were deployed to the scene to manage the ongoing situation. Additionally, train services to and from Ede were canceled as a safety precaution.

According to one witness, the collapse occurred shortly after the arch began swinging, followed by a loud bang. The bridge was intended to span a major canal as part of a new ring road project in Lochem, Gelderland.

Mayor Sebastiaan van ‘t Erve expressed shock over the incident, highlighting the extensive planning and development efforts over five years leading up to the construction. Despite this, the bridge collapsed in a single day, resulting in fatalities and injuries.

The exact cause of the collapse remains unclear, and investigations are ongoing. Local authorities confirmed that the injured workers were hospitalized but expected to recover.

Andre Meilink from the regional safety authority provided insight into the incident, explaining that the bridge began to twist as it was being lifted, leading to the collapse of a section.

Hamburg Airport hostage drama ends after 18 hours

At approximately 20:00 local time, the perpetrator fired his weapon into the air and hurled burning bottles from the vehicle, causing a commotion. While it remained unclear if he had explosives, he halted the car close to a fully occupied commercial flight, prompting the safe evacuation of all passengers on board.

Reportedly, the individual’s motive stemmed from disagreement with authorities over custody arrangements, expressing a desire to travel to Turkey with the child. Police spokeswoman Sandra Levgruen shared that he felt his life was in disarray, as per German broadcaster ZDF. Authorities attributed his actions to an “extraordinary psychological state” due to the custody conflicts with his ex-wife. The man had previously faced allegations of kidnapping the child when he took her to Turkey without permission, resulting in an investigation last year. The mother later returned the child to Germany.

Following the incident, Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher extended his support to the mother, child, and their family. Meanwhile, the airport pledged to swiftly restore regular operations, having originally planned 286 flights with around 34,500 passengers for the day.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has not claimed responsibility for specific attacks but has expressed that such actions on Russian territory are seen as an “inevitable, natural, and absolutely fair process.”

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has been ongoing since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. In the wake of these recent incidents, there have been casualties and damages on both sides, further escalating the tensions in the region.
