Chile-DR Congo Friendly Called Off as Ebola Outbreak Triggers Health Concerns

A planned international friendly between DR Congo and Chile in Spain has been cancelled after local authorities raised concerns over the ongoing Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo. The mayor of La Linea de la Concepcion signed a decree preventing the match from taking place on 9 June, citing recommendations from regional and municipal health officials as a precautionary measure.

Although DR Congo’s squad is currently training in Belgium and consists largely of players based outside the country, authorities expressed concerns over support staff and fans who have recently travelled from the affected region. The team had already cancelled a planned training camp in Kinshasa due to the outbreak and remains scheduled to play Denmark in a friendly match in Liege.

The Ebola outbreak, caused by the rare Bundibugyo strain, has prompted international travel restrictions, including entry bans by the United States for certain travellers from DR Congo and neighbouring countries. Despite the disruption, DR Congo is continuing preparations for its first FIFA World Cup appearance since 1974, with group-stage matches scheduled in the United States and Mexico later this month.

Shakira Wins €55m Tax Refund in Spain Case

A Spanish high court has ruled in favor of Colombian pop star Shakira, ordering the country’s tax authority to refund €55 million (£48 million) after determining the money was wrongly collected. The court said authorities failed to prove that the singer spent the required 183 days in Spain during 2011, meaning she could not legally be treated as a Spanish tax resident for that year.

The refund includes €24 million in income tax payments and nearly €25 million in penalties previously imposed for what tax officials had described as a serious infringement. Shakira welcomed the verdict, saying the decision “finally set the record straight” after years of public scrutiny, legal pressure, and personal stress affecting both her health and family.

The case is separate from Shakira’s earlier 2023 settlement with Spanish prosecutors over tax issues between 2012 and 2014, where she agreed to pay a fine while denying wrongdoing. The latest ruling comes as the global music star prepares to conclude her Women Don’t Cry Anymore world tour with a Madrid residency and upcoming performances linked to the FIFA Men’s World Cup final.

FIFA to kick start with 32 teams for World Cup

The most awaited 2022 FIFA Qatar worldcup will be held with a total of 32 teams playing. FIFA organisers on Wednesday told that there will not be an expanded team of 48.

An opinion for expanding the tournament had came from the FIFA President Gianni Infantino. He also proposed the idea of adding additional host nations.

“Following a thorough and comprehensive consultation process with the involvement of all the relevant stakeholders, it was concluded that under the current circumstances such a proposal could not be made now”, said the sport’s world ruling body said in statement.

FIFA and Qatar looked for the possibilities of using another Gulf state for hosting an expanded tournament. But political and logistical complexities raised for using another host Gulf nation.

FIFA said, “A joint analysis, in this respect, concluded that due to the advanced stage of preparations and the need for a detailed assessment of the potential logistical impact on the host country, more time would be required and a decision could not be taken before the deadline of June”.
