Jolie, Blanchett Urge Stronger Refugee Protections

Actors Angelina Jolie and Cate Blanchett, along with Archbishop Sarah Mullally and other public figures, have called on governments to uphold refugee protections as the 1951 UN Refugee Convention marks its 75th anniversary. The appeal comes as the United Nations warns that growing restrictions on asylum systems are putting vulnerable people at greater risk despite continued public support for offering safe refuge.

The UN refugee agency released a statement titled “The Promise”, signed by celebrities, athletes, business leaders and faith leaders, reaffirming support for the convention. UN High Commissioner Barham Salih, a former Iraqi president and refugee, said the agreement has saved millions of lives and urged nations to honour the commitment made to protect people forced to flee conflict and persecution.

The call comes amid increasing global displacement, tighter border controls in several countries, and financial challenges facing the UN refugee agency after major donor cuts. Rights groups have also expressed concern over stricter asylum policies in parts of Europe and the United States, warning they could weaken long-standing international refugee protections.

Angelina Jolie Visits Kherson, Praises Resilience of Civilians Under Fire

Hollywood actor and humanitarian Angelina Jolie travelled to Ukraine’s frontline city of Kherson and the neighbouring Mykolaiv region this week, meeting civilians, volunteers and medical staff who continue to endure relentless Russian attacks. Her visit was supported by the Legacy of War Foundation, which shared images of Jolie wearing a flak jacket while touring underground facilities sheltering residents from daily strikes.

Jolie said she was humbled by the courage of people living so close to the battlefield, noting that the world appears to be turning away from the protection of civilians. Kherson, once home to nearly 300,000 residents, remains within range of Russian forces who withdrew across the Dnipro River in 2022 but still launch frequent drone and artillery attacks.

Local authorities expressed gratitude for Jolie’s presence, saying it helps ensure Kherson is not forgotten amid the ongoing war. The actor last visited Ukraine in 2022, when she met displaced families in the western city of Lviv.

Winston Churchill’s Painting Sold by Angelina Jolie for $11.5 Million

A Moroccan landscape painting done by the former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and owned by Angelina Jolie got sold at an auction in London for more than $11.5 million.

The sale price was almost four times the pre-sale estimate and has smashed the records for a previous work by the leader- “Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque” sold at Christie’s in London for $11, 590, 715.

Churchill who was a keen artist got inspired by the Moroccan city and painted the Tower of the Koutoubia Mosque’s oil work and handed over it to fellow wartime leader US President Franklin Roosevelt. This work eventually went into the hands of actress Angelina Jolie.
