Amid the Afghanistan Crisis, Chaos Reigns at Kabul Airport
Outside Kabul International Airport, chaotic scenes have been reported as governments hurry to return their residents and Afghan colleagues. To disperse approaching crowds, Taliban gunmen controlling entry to the airport fired rounds into the air.
In the last 24 hours, 5,000 people have been evacuated through the airport, which is being run by specially deployed US forces. Taliban fighters stationed near the airport are reportedly refusing to let Afghans in without proper identification.
According to US officials, they are letting anyone with American passports to enter. Many Western nations were caught off guard by the hardline Islamist group’s rapid seizure of Kabul on Sunday.
