Cyberattack on Supermarket Freezers Forces European Stores to Dump Thousands of Food Items
Supermarkets across several European countries have been forced to discard large quantities of food after a cyberattack targeted their refrigeration and freezer systems. Belgium and Luxembourg were among the worst affected, with around 40 Delhaize supermarkets reporting damage. Similar incidents were also reported in Sweden, Ireland, the Netherlands, Estonia and Finland, disrupting food storage operations.
At a Delhaize supermarket in Hoeilaart, near Brussels, large piles of spoiled food, including frozen pizzas and ice cream, were seen being discarded. The affected branch estimated its losses at more than €100,000 (£83,500). The refrigeration failures left stores unable to safely preserve large quantities of frozen and chilled products, forcing staff to dispose of the affected stock.
The incident has raised concerns about the growing impact of cyberattacks on essential retail infrastructure and food supply chains. Supermarkets depend heavily on digital systems to monitor refrigeration, manage inventory and maintain food safety. The attack highlights how disruptions to seemingly routine store operations can result in significant financial losses and large-scale food wastage.
