At Least 68 Dead in Spain High-Speed Train Collision

At least 68 people were killed and 80 injured when two high-speed trains collided in Spain on Wednesday, October 28, 2026. The crash occurred in Castilla-La Mancha, south of Madrid, after a Renfe train struck a stationary Iryo train. Several carriages derailed, with some plunging down an embankment as emergency crews searched the wreckage for victims.

Transport Minister Oscar Puente said a computer communications failure triggered a red signal, but the Renfe train was subsequently authorised to proceed. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine how the collision occurred. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez expressed condolences to victims’ families and pledged to address any safety failures identified during the inquiry.

The disaster is Europe’s deadliest train accident since 2013 and Spain’s second major fatal rail crash this year. A January collision on the same railway line killed 46 people, raising fresh concerns about railway safety and maintenance investment. Following the latest crash, Renfe suspended ticket sales on the Madrid–Andalusia high-speed corridor until December 13.
