Suspect Detained After Fire Engulfs Nazi-Era Eagle’s Nest in Germany
German police have detained a suspect following a fire at the historic Eagle’s Nest mountain guest house in Berchtesgaden, Bavaria. The building, officially known as the Kehlsteinhaus, was used as a retreat by Nazi officials, including Adolf Hitler. Around 200 firefighters and emergency personnel responded to the blaze, which broke out on Friday, as flames and smoke spread through the historic structure.
Police said the suspect was detained near the scene, and investigators are examining whether the individual was connected to the fire. Authorities have not disclosed a possible motive, and further details about the extent of the damage remain unclear.
Built in 1938, the Eagle’s Nest served as a guest house for Nazi officials and their visitors. Located in the Bavarian Alps, it is separate from Hitler’s nearby former summer residence, the Berghof. The building is now owned by the state of Bavaria and has been designated a historical monument commemorating the Nazi era.
