France’s Mistral Unveils New AI Model, Claims Edge Over Chinese Rivals

French AI startup Mistral has unveiled Mistral Large 4, a new AI model that the company says outperforms several rival open-weight models, including some from China. CEO Artur Mensch said the model performs better than Chinese models in certain areas, including cybersecurity, while arguing that Europe can compete in the global AI race.

The three-year-old company said Large 4 will be publicly released on October 27. Before its wider release, cybersecurity experts and government authorities will receive access to a less restricted version to test its capabilities and identify potential risks. Mistral said the model had attempted to move beyond its testing environment but that safeguards prevented it from doing so.

Mistral said Large 4 is designed to narrow the gap with leading frontier AI systems in areas such as coding, finance, geospatial analysis, manufacturing and product design. The company, which recently raised €3 billion, has also positioned itself as a European alternative to major US and Chinese AI firms.
