Bosnia Heads to Polls as EU, US and Russia Vie for Influence

Bosnia and Herzegovina is set to hold general elections on October 4, with voters choosing representatives for the country’s tripartite presidency, national parliament and regional bodies. The election comes amid economic difficulties, slow progress toward European Union membership and a political crisis that continues to expose divisions within the country.

Bosnia remains divided between the Serb-dominated Republika Srpska and the Bosniak-Croat Federation, under a complex political system established by the Dayton peace accords. While many voters say they want greater focus on issues such as corruption, economic development and EU integration, political campaigns remain largely centred on ethnic and regional constituencies. The main contest includes nationalist parties and multi-ethnic opposition coalitions.

The election is also taking place against a backdrop of competing international interests. The EU is seeking greater integration of the Balkans, while Russia maintains close ties with Serbia and political forces in Republika Srpska. The United States continues to play a role in Bosnia’s political and economic affairs, including through energy projects and diplomacy. Preliminary election results are expected from October 5, with the final outcome likely to shape Bosnia’s political direction and its EU accession efforts.
