Spain Unveils Housing Measures After Eviction Protests

Spain’s coalition government has approved a new set of housing measures following protests over the country’s housing crisis, which intensified after the eviction of 87-year-old Maricarmen Abascal from her Madrid home. The proposals include a potential ban on evictions until 2030, an extension of rental contracts until 2028, tighter regulation of short-term and room rentals, and restrictions on housing purchases by investment firms.

Health Minister Mónica García said the measures could provide relief to more than five million people. However, opposition politician Míriam Nogueras criticised the proposed eviction restrictions, arguing that they could affect small landlords who rely on property investments. The measures still require parliamentary approval, and the minority coalition government does not hold a majority.

Abascal, who was reportedly removed from her apartment on a stretcher and later admitted to hospital, has become a symbol of Spain’s housing crisis. Her lawyer said she would be allowed to return home after reaching an agreement with the company that owns the property, although she has not yet signed the deal. Protests and an encampment have spread across Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Malaga and Cadiz.
