The mayor expressed concerns over some attendees holding anti-gay and anti-abortion views, stating that the far right is unwelcome. The conference began as scheduled but was interrupted by police, leaving attendees unable to re-enter and facing limited access to necessities. Farage criticized the decision to close the event, condemning it as an infringement on free speech.

French politician Eric Zemmour, denied entry, accused the mayor of using the police to suppress European participation. Organizers vowed to challenge the closure, highlighting the peaceful nature of the event. The conference, originally planned to accommodate 850 people, had around 250 attendees. This was the third venue attempt, as previous locations backed out due to pressure from an antifascist group.

France to sue teen for falsely accusing school head in headscarf row

France’s prime minister has announced that a teenage girl will face legal action for falsely accusing her headteacher of hitting her during a dispute over her wearing an Islamic headscarf. The headteacher resigned following death threats received after the incident.

This incident comes amidst heightened concerns over Islamist threats to French schools following the murders of two teachers, including Samuel Paty in 2020. The headteacher, unnamed publicly, cited safety concerns in his resignation letter sent to colleagues. Two individuals were detained for making death threats, though they had no direct connection to the school.

The police found no evidence to support the girl’s allegations, prompting Prime Minister Gabriel Attal to announce that she will be sued for false accusations. Politicians across the political spectrum condemned the hate campaign targeting the teacher.

Additionally, several Paris schools were closed due to bomb threats, with some investigators considering the possibility of Russian disinformation involvement. Prime Minister Attal previously warned of Russian efforts to destabilize France’s support for Ukraine.

Vladimir Kara-Murza: Fears for Russian activist after secretive jail move

A lawyer representing Russian opposition figure Vladimir Kara-Murza, who was imprisoned on treason charges for criticizing the war in Ukraine, has disclosed that he has been relocated to another prison in Siberia’s Omsk region. Concerns for his safety heightened when Kara-Murza disappeared from his initial jail, prompting UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron to seek clarity on his whereabouts. Russian prison transfers are typically secretive and can take weeks.

Previously held in a penal colony in Omsk, Kara-Murza’s lawyers revealed that he was moved to a different penal colony in the same region. The British national, sentenced to 25 years in April for spreading “false” information about the Russian army and alleged affiliation with an “undesirable organization,” had been an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin and had played a significant role in advocating for sanctions against Russian officials for human rights abuses and corruption.

Kara-Murza’s wife expressed deep concern over his transfer, emphasizing that there were no apparent grounds for it. She highlighted the gravity of the situation, as her husband had previously survived two alleged assassination attempts in 2015 and 2017 through poisoning. The British government, along with the US State Department, condemned Kara-Murza’s sentencing and described him as a target of Russia’s escalating repression campaign.

The UK government summoned Russia’s ambassador and pledged to explore measures against those responsible for his detention and mistreatment. Kara-Murza, who holds British citizenship, received support from various quarters, including UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron, who demanded information about his whereabouts.

Austrian ski gondola crashes in Hochoetz injuring Danish family

At the Hochoetz ski resort in Tyrol, Austria, a cable car accident occurred that left four members of a Danish family seriously injured. The gondola they were in plummeted approximately 10-12m (33-39ft) after a tree fell onto a support cable on Tuesday morning. The challenging rescue operation was hindered by the steep and difficult terrain beneath the gondola, making it hard for emergency workers to reach the scene. Additionally, two other individuals were injured in the incident. Despite the efficient functioning of the rescue chain, the stony area where the gondola crashed posed significant challenges for the rescue operation.

The group inside the gondola comprised a father, his son and daughter, and their uncle. A helicopter winched them from the scene, with one of the family members transported to a hospital in Innsbruck with life-threatening injuries. Two German citizens in another gondola also suffered injuries due to the vibrations caused by the cable, although their conditions were not immediately known. The cable car route, known as Acherkogelbahn, showed no signs of technical faults, and there was no evidence of human error, according to the police.

One puzzling aspect of the incident is the cause of the tree falling onto the support cable. District police commandant Hubert Juen mentioned to the Kurier website that either a tree or branches landed directly on the bracket to which the gondola was attached. Authorities are investigating this aspect to understand the circumstances leading to the tragic accident. Notably, despite dozens of other gondolas being attached to the support cable at the time, none were affected by the crash, adding a layer of complexity to the investigation.
