Spanish Police Launch Operation to Clear Migrants From Ceuta Beaches

Spanish riot police and military personnel began an operation on Friday to move thousands of migrants from beaches in Ceuta, a Spanish enclave in North Africa. Authorities estimate around 10,000 migrants remain in the territory after more than 72,000 people crossed from Morocco during an unprecedented border rush in late July.

The operation began early Friday morning, with migrants being escorted from beaches to temporary accommodation at the port. Tensions emerged as people competed for limited shelter spaces, and Reuters footage showed police firing rubber bullets into the air and using batons before the situation calmed and the relocation continued. A new temporary facility has space for around 1,700 adult men, while minors are being housed separately.

Humanitarian organisations say thousands of migrants remain without adequate shelter and are sleeping on beaches and pavements. One NGO estimated that around 4,000 people were still outdoors in Ceuta. NGO leaders also said authorities had been slow to provide sufficient accommodation under European migration rules, while officials may expect many migrants to return voluntarily to Morocco.

Suspected Smugglers Face Trial Over Channel Drowning

Fourteen men are standing trial in Paris over their alleged involvement in a migrant-smuggling operation linked to the deaths of more than 30 people in the English Channel in November 2021. The tragedy occurred after an overloaded dinghy deflated during the dangerous crossing from northern France to Britain.

French prosecutors allege that Afghan and Iraqi-Kurdish smuggling networks organised the journey from migrant camps near Calais and Grande-Synthe. The defendants face charges including involuntary manslaughter, facilitating illegal immigration as part of an organised group and criminal conspiracy. Two defendants are being tried in absentia.

Twenty-seven bodies were recovered after a fishing vessel alerted emergency services, while at least four people remain missing. Only two migrants survived. A later British inquiry found the deaths could have been avoided and criticised decisions made during the emergency response. The Paris trial is scheduled to continue until September 30.

Residents of Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta called for calm on Wednesday as hundreds of rallies were planned across Spain over the region’s growing migrant crisis. Authorities estimate that more than 10,000 migrants, including unaccompanied minors, remain in temporary camps, on streets and along beaches nearly five weeks after a major border crossing from Morocco.

The situation has led to frequent protests, with some residents criticizing the central government for its handling of the crisis and demanding that migrants be returned to their countries or relocated elsewhere in Spain. Recent demonstrations have also seen sporadic attacks around migrant camps, while authorities have arrested people involved in clashes with security forces. Local organizers said they wanted peaceful demonstrations and sought to prevent far-right groups from provoking further tensions.

Political disagreements have complicated efforts to find a solution. The opposition People’s Party has backed calls for stronger action, while the left-wing government has accused its opponents of using the crisis for political gain. Madrid has increased temporary accommodation capacity to more than 3,400 places and deployed over 1,600 police officers, but local leaders and charities say more resources are needed to protect both residents and migrants.
