Sweden to Deploy Gripen Jets and Warships to Finland

Sweden will deploy Gripen fighter jets and a corvette warship to help monitor and protect Finnish territory until at least the end of 2026, Finland’s Defence Forces said on Friday. The deployment comes as security concerns rise along NATO’s northern borders with Russia.

Swedish Defence Minister Pal Jonson said Finland had requested stronger air-defence support because of the deteriorating security situation. Sweden may also provide vessels equipped with drone-fighting capabilities and ground-based anti-drone systems, while its forces could assist Finland in responding to violations of Finnish territory if necessary.

Sweden and Finland, which are both among NATO’s newest members, have close defence ties. Finland shares a 1,340-km border with Russia, while recent drone incidents across the Baltic region have increased concerns about the Ukraine war spilling over into neighbouring NATO countries. Separately, Swedish defence company Saab secured a 1.2 billion crown ($126 million) order from Finland for RBS 70 NG portable air-defence systems.

AUKUS Unveils Unmanned Undersea Vehicle Programme, Deliveries to Begin in 2027

The United States, United Kingdom, and Australia have announced a joint programme to develop advanced unmanned undersea vehicles (UUVs) under the AUKUS security partnership, with deliveries expected to begin in 2027. The announcement was made during a defence ministers’ meeting in Singapore, where officials highlighted the project as a major step in strengthening maritime security and military cooperation.

According to a joint statement, the new undersea drones will enhance reconnaissance, surveillance, and strike capabilities while supporting anti-submarine warfare, mine countermeasures, electronic warfare, and operations in contested maritime environments. The initiative falls under AUKUS Pillar Two, which focuses on cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelligence, cyber systems, quantum computing, hypersonics, and advanced undersea capabilities.

Defence leaders from all three nations said the programme will help protect critical underwater infrastructure, including communication cables and pipelines, while improving their ability to respond to emerging threats. Formed in 2021, AUKUS is widely seen as part of efforts to counter growing strategic challenges in the Indo-Pacific region. China has repeatedly criticised the pact, warning that it could increase regional tensions and fuel an arms race.

Poland Scrambles Jets After Russian Strikes Near Border With Ukraine

Poland activated its air defence and scrambled fighter jets early Wednesday after Russia launched a wave of airstrikes on western Ukraine, close to the Polish border. The Polish Armed Forces said quick-reaction fighter jets and an early-warning aircraft were deployed to secure national airspace.

In a statement on X, Poland’s operational command confirmed that ground-based air defence units and radar systems were raised to their highest state of readiness amid heightened tensions along NATO’s eastern flank.

The response followed widespread air raid alerts across Ukraine around 0400 GMT, as the Ukrainian Air Force warned of incoming Russian missile and drone attacks.
