Giorgia Meloni: Italian PM seeks damages over deepfake videos

Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy, is pursuing €100,000 (£85,374) in damages after deepfake pornography featuring her was shared online. Scheduled to appear in court in Sassari on July 2nd, Meloni aims to testify against the production of these videos, where her face was digitally imposed onto explicit content. The culprits, a 40-year-old man believed to have created the videos and his 73-year-old father, are currently under investigation and face defamation charges.

Italian authorities tracked down the individuals through the mobile device used to upload the content. The distribution of such material constitutes a criminal offense in Italy. The videos, which circulated widely on a US pornographic website, prompted Meloni’s legal team to pursue damages. If successful, the €100,000 compensation will be directed to a fund supporting women who have suffered from male violence.

Maria Giulia Marongiu, Meloni’s lawyer, emphasized the symbolic nature of the requested sum, intending to encourage victims to come forward and challenge such abuses of power. Notably, the deepfake videos predate Meloni’s appointment as prime minister in 2022. Unfortunately, instances of deepfake pornography have become increasingly prevalent online, causing significant distress to victims whose likenesses are manipulated in explicit contexts.

Jamie Foxx accused of sexual assault at NYC rooftop bar in 2015

A woman has filed a lawsuit against Jamie Foxx, accusing the renowned actor of sexually assaulting her at a New York City restaurant eight years ago. The legal action alleges that Foxx, whose real name is Eric Marlon Bishop, inappropriately touched the unnamed woman after she approached him for a photo. Foxx’s representatives have yet to provide a response to the BBC’s request for comment on the matter.

The incident is said to have taken place in the early morning hours of August 26, 2015, at Catch NYC. According to the lawsuit, Foxx, appearing intoxicated, complimented the woman on her appearance, led her to a secluded area of the restaurant, and proceeded to touch her breasts and put his hands in her underwear without her consent. The situation reportedly concluded when the woman’s friend intervened.

In addition to suing Foxx, the accuser is seeking damages from the restaurant and bar owner, Mark Birnbaum, who was allegedly seated with Foxx shortly before the incident. The lawsuit claims that Birnbaum and the restaurant’s staff breached their duty of care by failing to protect the plaintiff. Mark Birnbaum has not yet responded to inquiries from the BBC.

The legal action asserts that the woman continues to endure severe emotional distress, anxiety, humiliation, embarrassment, post-traumatic stress disorder, and other physical and emotional damages as a result of the alleged assault. Notably, this lawsuit is filed just days before the expiration of the New York Adult Survivors Act, allowing victims of sex crimes to pursue legal action even after the statute of limitations has lapsed. The act has been previously invoked in cases involving public figures like Donald Trump, Sean Combs, Bill Cosby, Cuba Gooding Jr, and Russell Brand. Despite the serious accusations, Jamie Foxx has remained silent on the matter as the legal proceedings unfold.

Storms in Europe cause huge damage and disruption

Central Europe, including Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, has been hit by severe storms and heavy rainfall, leading to significant damage and disruptions. Many towns and cities in the region have experienced torrential rain, causing floods and forcing the closure of numerous roads.

The rail traffic has also been affected, with the Hamburg-Berlin line and a major north-south line between Kassel and Goettingen being closed due to storm damage. Switzerland has also faced thunderstorms, resulting in numerous calls to the fire department.

Strong winds reaching speeds of up to 135 km/h have uprooted trees, damaged roofs, and street infrastructure, although no casualties have been reported. Austria has witnessed several landslides that have affected homes, and the state of Carinthia experienced large hailstones of up to 8 centimeters in diameter, causing significant damage to crops.

Videos circulating on social media show violent storms and flooded streets, including the complete submersion of the forecourt and road in front of the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe ICE train station.
