Huge protest against new church in Yekaterinburg park
Mass protest raised against a church being built on a park square in Yekaterinburg in Russia. About 2,000 people have gathered in the Yekaterinburg park to show their protest.
The protesters have toppled the fence in Yekaterinburg, showing their protest. After the images of the fencing spread on social media, opponents of the construction project began gathering around the square to protest.
They knock down the fencing and made a tent to remain there overnight. Some of the activists tried to block the traffic in a nearby road. But the police intruded and stopped their attempt.
They argument they put forward was that authorities should pick a different site for the new church and not deprive residents of a favorite beachfront.
The Russian Orthodox Church says that new churches should be built to replace the other churches that were destroyed under Soviet anti-religion laws.
The church in construction at Yekaterinburg park is due to be completed in 2023 in the 300th anniversary of the founding of Yekaterinburg, Russia’s fourth-largest city.
