Israel and Germany have reached a settlement over compensation for Israelis killed at the Munich Olympics in 1972. After being held as hostages by members of a Palestinian militant group, eleven Israeli athletes were killed.

Days before the tragedy’s 50th anniversary, an agreement of €28 million (£24 million) was reached. Earlier this month, families vowed to boycott the tragedy’s remembrances because the compensation they received was insufficient. Isaac Herzog, the president of Israel, praised the agreement as a “important step by the German government” and expressed his approval.

One of the deadliest episodes in Olympic history is the Munich tragedy, which happened on September 5, 1972. Palestinian gunmen from the Black September organisation kidnapped Israeli athletes within the Olympic village.

While the militants attempted to flee the country, two were shot dead almost immediately, and the other two died during a gunfight with West German police at an adjacent airfield.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Mr. Herzog expressed their “happiness and relief” at reaching a consensus on historical clarity in a joint statement.

Germany has also said that it will make records about the hostage-taking and the failed rescue attempt public. The families of the victims have long accused German authorities of not doing enough to safeguard athletes and being secretive about their security flaws.

The discovery of thousands of unregistered private swimming pools in France has brought the French tax authorities an unexpected windfall. Over 20,000 underground pools were found after an artificial intelligence (AI) experiment.

They have generated about €10 million ($9.9; £8.5 million), according to French media. Because they increase property value, pools can result in higher property taxes and are required to be declared under French law.

During a trial in October 2021, the software—which was created by Google and the French consulting firm Capgemini—found the pools on aerial photographs of nine French districts.

The study was conducted in the regions of the Alpes-Maritimes, Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Ardèche, Rhône, Haute-Savoie, Vendée, Maine-et-Loire, and Morbihan; however, tax officials claim it may now be implemented nationally. According to data portal Statista, there were more than 3.2 million private swimming pools in France in 2020, and business was flourishing even before the Covid epidemic.

However, as more workers choose to work from home, the number of pools installed increased. A typical pool measuring 30 square metres (322 square feet) is subject to an annual tax of €200 ($200; £170). The software may potentially be used to identify gazebos, patios, and unreported home additions that affect property taxes, according to the tax authorities.

According to reports, two Air-France pilots have been suspended following a physical incident in the cockpit.

According to the Swiss news agency La Tribune, the captain and co-pilot fought as they were flying an Airbus A320 from Geneva to Paris in June. Hearing the noise, members of the cabin crew stepped in to help. The flight’s only crew member remained in the cockpit until it touched down safely.

The airline informed La Tribune that the event had no impact on the flight. The incident occurred after a French air inquiry body’s report on Tuesday claimed that the airline’s culture lacked rigour when it came to following safety rules.

Gulsen, a Turkish musician, was detained and charged with inciting hatred after making a joke about religious schools. The singer made light of the “perversion” of one of her band members in April by joking that he had been to one.

Even though the statements were made years ago, they suddenly gained popularity online and came under fire from conservative groups. Critics claim that President Recep Tayyip Erdogan made the arrest in an effort to increase his support before the elections the following year. Gulsen, who is known as Turkey’s Madonna, apologised on social media before being detained and claimed people trying to “polarise society” had taken offence to her statements.

The singer apologised to “everyone who was hurt,” writing on Twitter and Instagram that she was “defending freedom of expression” with her “joke between coworkers” and that she “sincerely regrets any offence caused.” Until her trial, she is being detained.

President Erdogan attended one of the country’s first Imam Hatip religious schools, which were established by the state to train young men to become imams and speakers. President Erdogan’s AK Party first came to power about 20 years ago.

The institutions have also been attended by several other members of government.

The singer, whose real name is Gulsen Colakoglu, has previously faced criticism for her appearance and support of LGBT rights from traditional segments of Turkish society.

The 46-year-detention old’s has caused a rift in the nation. While conservative and pro-government supporters have largely criticised her statements as “insolence,” more liberal and pro-opposition voices have criticised her arrest as being excessive and reactionary.

The action coincides with current debates about the AKP’s purported “interventions into lives” as well as the recent countrywide bans on a number of music events.

Many Twitter users criticised Gulsen’s detention, and some compared it to the fact that a theologian who recently advocated killing people who don’t pray went unpunished.

Since being released from a conservatorship that governed practically every area of her life, Britney Spears has released her first new music. Spears made her comeback to music on Friday with the release of Hold Me Closer, a duet with Sir Elton John.

Before the album’s release, she remarked, “It’s pretty damn cool that I’m singing with one of the most classic men of our time. It’s a big thing to me, so I’m a little overwhelmed. Over a summery party groove, the song combines three of Sir Elton John’s timeless hits: Tiny Dancer, The One, and Don’t Go Breaking My Heart.

It is challenging to judge how Spears’ voice has altered since we last heard her because she and Sir Elton sing in sync throughout the entire track with their voices bathed in echo.

She does, however, indulge in a few ad libs, one of which is a signature “baby” halfway through the song, which shows that her vocals have deepened and developed over the past six years.
