Stolen Renoir Paintings Recovered in France, Six Arrested

Two paintings by renowned French Impressionist artist Pierre-Auguste Renoir, worth millions of dollars, have been recovered following a museum theft on the French Riviera. Six suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, Cagnes-sur-Mer Mayor Bryan Masson announced on Friday. The paintings, Madame Colonna Romano and Young Woman at the Well, belong to Paris’s Orsay Museum and were on loan to the Renoir Museum.

The theft took place in the early hours of September 8, when thieves reportedly cut a hole in the garden fence and entered the museum grounds through a window. They stole four paintings, but dropped two of them — Madame Pichon and Coco Reading, which depicts Renoir’s young son Claude — as police arrived after alarms were triggered and pursued the suspects.

Mayor Masson described the recovery as a major relief for the town and its residents. Authorities have not yet publicly disclosed the details of how the two paintings were recovered, and the investigation remains ongoing. A planned press conference was cancelled to avoid interfering with the inquiry into the theft and the alleged involvement of the arrested suspects.
