Merz Ally Thorsten Frei Elected CDU/CSU Parliamentary Leader Amid Political Pressure

Germany’s ruling conservative alliance has elected Thorsten Frei, a close ally of Chancellor Friedrich Merz, as the new leader of the CDU/CSU parliamentary faction with 91.9% support. The appointment comes after days of internal tensions following a cabinet reshuffle that drew criticism from within the party. Frei is expected to play a central role in coordinating with the coalition partner, the Social Democrats (SPD), to advance the government’s economic reform agenda.

The reshuffle has added to the challenges facing Merz, whose popularity has declined after his first year in office. Recent opinion polls show the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) leading nationally with 27% support, ahead of the CDU/CSU alliance at 21%. A separate survey also found that only 15% of respondents were satisfied with Merz’s performance as chancellor, while dissatisfaction within his own party has grown over recent ministerial changes.

Despite the criticism, Merz expressed confidence that tensions within the party would ease before parliament reconvenes in September, when the new cabinet is expected to be formally sworn in. The upcoming state elections in Saxony-Anhalt and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are expected to be a major test for the governing coalition, as the AfD looks to build on its growing support and strengthen its position ahead of future national elections.
