German police arrest Red Army Faction suspect Daniela Klette

Daniela Klette, a former member of the Red Army Faction (RAF), a militant group in Germany, has been apprehended in Berlin after evading authorities for decades over charges including armed robbery and attempted murder. The arrest follows a recent episode of the cold case show Aktenzeichen XY, where a police appeal for information on three remaining fugitives from the group prompted numerous tips.

Markus Heusler, the prosecutor handling the case, confirmed the identity of the detained woman, now aged 65, as Daniela Klette. Alongside her, Burkhard Garweg and Ernst-Volker Staub, the two other outstanding members of the group’s third generation, remain at large.

The RAF, initially led by figures like Andreas Baader and Ulrike Meinhof, gained infamy in the 1970s for its violent actions, including numerous murders of public officials, police, business leaders, and US soldiers. However, the crimes attributed to Klette and her associates occurred between 1999 and 2016 and were not claimed under the RAF’s name. The group officially disbanded in 1998, as announced in an anonymous letter sent to Reuters’ office in Cologne, where remaining members declared the end of the urban guerrilla movement known as the RAF.

France murders: Man held after mother and children killed in Meaux

A 33-year-old man has been apprehended by French police on suspicion of murdering his wife and four children in Meaux, a suburb 40km northeast of Paris. The victims, a woman, and her children aged between nine months and 10 years, were found dead in their apartment. Prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier described the crime scene as marked by “extreme violence” with pools of blood present. The flat showed no signs of forced entry, and the father was absent.

The investigation began when a concerned neighbor, unable to reach the family and noticing closed shutters, discovered blood on the door handle and in front of the door. The police, following CCTV footage, traced and arrested the suspect at his father’s residence in Sevran. The suspect was known to the police due to a previous domestic violence incident in 2019, a month before the birth of their third child, where he attacked his partner with a knife.

The Versailles judicial police service is conducting the investigation, revealing that the mother and her two eldest daughters had numerous stab wounds, while the two youngest were likely strangled or drowned. Post-mortem examinations for the younger children are scheduled for Wednesday. The suspect, described as previously undergoing treatment, had documents suggesting potential psychiatric hospital admission in 2017 and a prescription for tranquilizers.

Neighbors mentioned that the mother was friendly, while the father, who had faced job loss, exhibited signs of depression. The 2019 domestic violence case was dropped due to the partner’s mental health. This incident adds to a series of recent infanticides in the Paris region, including a man confessing to killing his three daughters in November and a policeman committing filicide before suicide in October.

Greta Thunberg Faces Charges for Second Blockade of Swedish Oil Port

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is now facing charges for disregarding a police directive to disperse during a protest at a bustling Swedish port. This comes several months after she was previously found guilty of a similar offense. In July, she received a fine for her refusal to leave a demonstration that obstructed a road used for oil transport from Malmo harbor.

Following this earlier conviction, Ms. Thunberg and fellow activists returned to the port and were once again forcibly removed by law enforcement. Her second trial is slated for September 27th.

In an official statement, Swedish prosecutor Isabel Ekberg asserted that the demonstration on July 24th had not received authorization and had disrupted traffic flow. During this protest, Ms. Thunberg had joined forces with the group Reclaim the Future in southern Sweden, aiming to impede the movement of vehicles to protest against the utilization of fossil fuels. This demonstration unfolded just hours after Ms. Thunberg had been fined 2,500 Swedish Krona (£180; $224) for her involvement in a protest at the same port on June 19th.

Greek Minister Steps Down Following Death of Passenger on Delayed Ferry

Greece’s shipping minister, Miltiadis Varvitsiotis, has resigned due to controversial remarks he made on television in the wake of a passenger’s death, allegedly pushed off a ferry by crew members.

Varvitsiotis expressed that his statements, which appeared to support the ferry’s crew in the incident, were “misinterpreted.”

Criminal charges have been filed against the ship’s captain and three crew members regarding the incident at the port of Piraeus in Athens, which has sparked outrage in Greece.

A video on social media depicted the 36-year-old passenger, Antonis Kargiotis, attempting to board the Blue Horizon ferry as it was departing from Athens to Crete. Crew members on the loading ramp seemed to physically prevent him from boarding, and he was subsequently pushed into the sea. The ferry continued its voyage as scheduled but returned to port as instructed by authorities, where Kargiotis’ body was recovered.

Varvitsiotis faced severe criticism for his remarks, with Greek newspaper Ekathimerini describing them as “entirely misguided and deeply regrettable.”

In a statement on social media, Varvitsiotis expressed shock over Kargiotis’ death and claimed that his comments had been “misinterpreted,” emphasizing that he did not equate the victim with the perpetrators and expressing his discomfort with the backlash he received.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed disgust and horror over the incident, attributing it to a combination of irresponsibility, cynicism, contempt, and indifference. He pledged that the state would fulfill its duty.

The ferry’s captain and three crew members faced a prosecutor on September 6, the day following the passenger’s death. The captain is charged with felony dangerous interference with maritime traffic, while the crew member accused of pushing the passenger faces charges of manslaughter with potential malice. Two other crew members are being prosecuted for complicity in manslaughter.

Attica Group, the owner of the Blue Horizon ferry line, issued a statement expressing devastation over the tragic incident and pledging cooperation with the authorities.

German man arrested in France for allegedly imprisoning wife 12 years

A German man has been taken into custody in France after his wife was allegedly held captive for a period of 12 years in their residence. The woman, also of German nationality, was discovered in a bedroom within the apartment, partially clothed and with a shaved head, according to an AFP report citing French police sources.

The bedroom in which the woman was found had been sealed off with wire mesh within their home located in Forbach, near the border with Germany. The 55-year-old man is under suspicion for charges related to abduction and other offenses.

Authorities revealed that the 53-year-old woman had managed to access a phone and contacted German police, who then alerted their French counterparts.

Local prosecutor Olivier Glady described the woman’s health as “not good” after an initial examination. He also noted the presence of around nine cats in the apartment, dismissing claims from French media that the apartment contained bars used for confining the wife, clarifying that these were intended to prevent the cats from escaping.

Contrary to earlier reports, Glady stated that no signs of violence or blood were found at the scene. The unemployed suspect had previously worked in the German industry. He is currently held in Metz, an eastern French city, according to BFMTV.

Neighbors interviewed by Germany’s Bild newspaper indicated that the man had informed them of his wife’s cancer diagnosis, explaining her screams of pain as a result of the illness. A neighbor named Alicia characterized the man as “polite and nice,” while another witness, Erika, had not seen the woman in approximately a decade.

Reports from French media mentioned the discovery of a diary-like notebook within the apartment, suggesting the man had documented his actions, including instances when he provided food to his wife.
