Croatia bus crash: Twelve Polish pilgrims killed and 32 injured

Twelve people were killed on Saturday in Croatia when a bus transporting Polish pilgrims ran off the road and into a ditch. According to reports, all 32 still alive passengers had injuries, 19 of them badly. Three priests and six nuns were part of the journey, which was planned by the Catholic organisation Brotherhood of St. Joseph. They were going to the Bosnian Catholic site of Medjugorje.

The Polish Foreign Ministry reported that all of the passengers were adults from Poland.

When the bus they were riding in drove off the A4 road between Jarek Bisaski and Podvorec, northeast of Zagreb, the accident occurred at about 05:40 local time (04:50 GMT).

Two Polish ministers are travelling to Croatia in response to the catastrophe, and Poland’s justice minister and prosecutor general have directed the Warsaw Prosecutors Office to begin an investigation into the circumstances leading up to the disaster.

Although 11 deaths were first reported, one more passed away later in a hospital.

They were all pilgrims, mostly from the Masovian province’s Radom and Sokolow, which also contains Warsaw, the capital of Poland.

The driver was not believed to be one among the dead, according to the Polish Foreign Ministry, but this has not yet been verified. Andrej Plenkovi, the prime minister of Croatia, sent his sympathies to the relatives of the victims and said in a tweet that the emergency services were doing everything they could to assist. Poland is a very famous destination for pilgrims because of rumours that in the 1980s, local youngsters witnessed an apparition of the Virgin Mary there.

Euro 2020: England beats Croatia in group D Opener

On Sunday as England registered a 1-0 victory over Croatia, Raheem Sterling scored his first tournament goal in the opening game at the Euro 2020. The Manchester City forward got on the end of a through ball from Kalvin Phillips and slipped it into the net in the 57th minute.

England have opened the continental tournament with a win in 10 attempts for the first time. England now lead the Group D points table and will square off against Scotland on Friday. Austria defeated debutants North Macedonia 3-1, in the Group C opener, at the Euro 2020. Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautović came off the bench to score a goal each and help Austria win the game. It was Austria’s first win at a major soccer tournament in 31 years and its first-ever at the European Championship.

Austria now lead the Group C points table while the Dutch side is placed second. Both teams have 3 points each in their kitty.

Croatians sceptical about Covid-19 vaccine

The majority of the people of Croatia has expressed their distrust in the effectiveness of the process of vaccination against Covid-19.  

In a survey recently conducted in the country, only 43 per cent have responded in favour of the process. Notably, around 57 per cent has taken a stand against the process.

The shocking data has been revealed by a survey conducted by a market research firm, named Valicon.

The report has come at the time pharma giants are aggressively competing with each other to dominate the vaccination platform.

What the survey report actually reflects is the confusion prevail in the universe about the effectiveness of the vaccination process against the virus.

As many as 523 people, all of them Croatians, have participated in the survey conducted by the market research firm.

Anyway, the latest statement released by US-based pharma giant Pfizer contradicts the survey presented by the market research firm.

As per the statement, the vaccine developed by the US-based firm is more than 95 per cent efficient.

Another vaccine developed to fight the virus outbreak is said to be around 90 per cent effective. It is one developed by Oxford.

The assurances come from the vaccination sector dismisses the confusion raised by the surveys like the one conducted in Croatia baseless.

Lets Bring Home Some Croatian Taste !

Make way for some Croatian desserts! Fritule, the festive Croatian pastry are made particularly for Christmas. They resemble little doughnuts, the Italian zeppole, Venetian frìtole, and the Dutch Christmas snack “oliebollen”. Check out this delicious recipe!

Ingredients:

  • 500 grams of flour
  • 20 grams fresh yeast
  • 2 egg yolk
  • 80 grams raisins
  • Zest of 1 lemon
  • 50 grams white sugar
  • 20 grams melted butter
  • 150-200 ml warm milk
  • 50 ml brandy
  • 5 grams salt
  • 500 ml oil
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Preparation:

Sift flour into a bowl. Combine egg yolk raisins, salt, sugar, butter, grated lemon zest and 25 ml of brandy in a large bowl. In a large glass, dissolve yeast with 100 ml milk and 2 tablespoon sugar, cover and let rise to fill the glass.

Add yeast to the flour and add enough milk so it forms a soft dough. Allow it to rest covered for approximately 30 minutes. Heat the oil in a deep frying pan. Take the dough as pieces with a spoon and drop it into the frying oil. Fry each balls until all sides turn golden brown.

Take out each ball and let it rest on a towel to drain out the excess oil. Once all the Fritule balls are ready, pour the rest of brandy over it. Transfer it into a serving bowl and dust with powdered sugar.
