A battle has broken out between Armenia and Azerbaijan over the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Armenia and Azerbaijan are the two former Soviet Socialist Republic countries.

The dispute between these two countries emerged post the disintegration of Soviet Union.

During the 1990s, the region witnessed a severe conflict. Tens of thousands of people lost life due to the conflict.

The latest protest was also violent. As many as 23 people have lost their life due to the conflict.

The disputed region is at present under the control of Armenia – certain ethnic groups based in the country.

Azerbaijan does not recognise this. The country considers this region as an integral part of this territory.

The International community also recognises the ownership of Azerbaijan over the region.

Martial law has been declared amid the violence in some parts of Azerbaijan, as well as in Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh.
