Two individuals suspected of espionage and sabotage activities targeting German military support for Ukraine have been apprehended in Bavaria, Germany. Described as dual German-Russian nationals, they were arrested in Bayreuth on suspicion of spying for Russia, including scouting potential targets such as US military facilities in Germany. The main suspect, Dieter S, is accused of various offenses, including planning explosions, arson, and maintaining contact with Russian intelligence. He is also alleged to have participated in a Russian proxy armed force in eastern Ukraine from 2014 to 2016.

The second suspect, Alexander J, is accused of assisting Dieter S in identifying potential targets. Germany, as the second largest donor of military aid to Ukraine after the US, has earmarked significant funds for this purpose. The suspects are accused of discussing sabotage operations to undermine Germany’s support for Ukraine, particularly targeting military and industrial infrastructure. The arrests are seen as a significant success in combating Russian espionage networks, according to German officials.

These developments come amidst ongoing efforts by Germany to bolster Ukraine’s air defenses, with plans to provide additional Patriot systems. The arrests follow other notable espionage cases in Germany, including a German national suspected of passing information to Russian diplomats and the former CEO of Wirecard, who is believed to have fled to Moscow and is now suspected of being a Russian spy.

A German government official has been apprehended in Germany on allegations of sharing classified information with Russia. The individual, identified only as Thomas H in accordance with German privacy regulations, was employed by a department focused on military equipment and information technology. It is claimed that he took independent initiative to visit both the Russian embassy in Berlin and the consulate in Bonn, offering his services.

After being presented before a judge on Wednesday, he was taken into custody pending a trial. Justice Minister Marco Buschmann took to the social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to announce the arrest, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

The accused is believed to have handed over information gathered through his professional responsibilities with the intention of it reaching a Russian intelligence agency, as stated by the federal prosecutor’s office. The arrest took place in Koblenz, western Germany, accompanied by searches of his home and workplace.

This incident follows a warning issued in June by the domestic security agency, the BfV, about the potential threat of an “aggressive Russian espionage operation” amidst Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine. This isn’t the first occurrence of its kind since the Russian invasion began in February the previous year.

In a separate case from January, another German citizen named Arthur E was arrested under suspicion of treason for his alleged role in a plot to supply intelligence to Russia. He was thought to be associated with an employee of the German foreign intelligence service (BND) who had been apprehended in December on charges of spying for Russia.

In what has been referred to as one of Sweden’s worst ever suspected espionage cases, two Swedish brothers who are accused of selling secrets to Russia’s intelligence agencies are on trial. The Kia brothers, Peyman, 42, and Payam, 35, are charged with espionage for Moscow during a ten-year period.

The older brother had previously served in the army and security forces of Sweden. Both men deny culpability, and Peyman Kia’s attorney maintains that there is insufficient evidence to support a conviction.

The case was special, according to the prosecutor, Mats Ljungqvist, who told Sweden’s state network SVT that the nation had not seen anything like it “in over 20 years.”

Due to the sensitivity of the subject being discussed, a large portion of the trial is being held behind closed doors. Everyone present in the Stockholm courthouse has undergone security checks, and press access is restricted.

The suspects had access to a list of every single Sapo employee, according to intelligence specialist Joakim von Braun, who called it the worst case of espionage in Sweden’s history. Russian intelligence concentrates on human sources, therefore just that is a big issue, he told SVT.

Peyman Kia reportedly worked in one of Swedish intelligence’s most top-secret divisions, the Office for Special Acquisition (KSI), at one time in his career.

Investigators seized mobile phones, a shattered hard drive, several other storage devices, and papers outlining cash and gold transactions in the months leading up to his and his brother’s arrest in late 2021.
