Starting with just three vehicles and no prior industry experience, Manoj Padikkal transformed Padikkal Travels into a trusted name in school transport and tourism through relentless determination, consistency, and a focus on quality. He shares how one opportunity grew into a long-term vision driven by innovation, discipline, and people-centric values. From integrating AI for enhanced safety to building strong industry relationships, his journey is a blend of tradition and technology. More than just managing vehicles and routes, his story is about building trust, upholding responsibility, and making a meaningful difference through dependable service.

In the early days of Padikkal Travels, what was the biggest learning curve you encountered as a newcomer to the industry?

When I launched Padikkal Travels in 2003, I had no background in the transport sector. What truly set things in motion was the support of a trusted contact who believed in my potential and gave me a chance to manage transport services. Sensing the opportunity, I decided to take the plunge with just three vehicles. From that point on, it’s been a continuous learning curve. The most unexpected challenge was stepping into an industry I knew little about—but I was driven to make the most of the opportunity and grow from every experience.

Was there a specific reason or experience that made you focus on the transport sector?

The journey into the transport sector wasn’t something I had planned. It began with a single opportunity. Someone saw a potential in me and offered me my very first contract. I didn’t have experience, but I had determination. After successfully handling that, nearby schools began reaching out, asking if I could take on their transport services, too. That’s when it clicked. I saw a real opportunity to build something meaningful. What started by chance turned into a calling. I realised that with hard work, trust, and consistency, I could create a service that made a difference in people’s daily lives.

Alongside school transport, you’ve built a strong presence in travel and tourism. How different is it in terms of challenges and customer expectations?

Travel and tourism come with their own set of challenges. But compared to school transport, it’s definitely more flexible. School transport demands constant vigilance; you’re responsible for the safety of young children every single day. There’s no room for error. Even a single day off isn’t an option, and if a bus breaks down, it has to be resolved immediately. The expectations are much higher because parents are trusting you with what matters most to them. In tourism, while safety is still a priority, the urgency and emotional responsibility aren’t as intense. Managing school transport teaches you discipline, precision, and accountability, and those values carry over to every other part of the business.

In a service-oriented industry like transportation, what strategies have helped you consistently meet client expectations and resolve issues efficiently?

It begins with building the right team. A strong HR foundation allows us to recruit individuals who not only have the necessary skills but also share our core values—safety, punctuality, and professionalism. We also maintain strict control over vehicle upkeep; all our buses are serviced regularly at our in-house garage to ensure they’re always in top condition. Just as crucial is communication—we prioritize client feedback, conduct regular site visits, and keep open lines of communication at all times. When problems do arise, we address them swiftly and personally. In this line of work, trust is everything, and how you respond makes all the difference.

Over the years, what guiding principle has shaped the way you lead and grow your business?

One principle I’ve always followed is to never compromise on quality and to remain accessible to clients at all times. In a people-centric business like ours, consistency and reliability are what earn long-term trust. Many of our clients have been with us for more than a decade, and that loyalty comes from strong relationships, not just service contracts. Being available, responsive, and committed to high standards every single day has been the key to building and maintaining enduring partnerships.

Your business spans several states and serves many institutions. How do you ensure consistency in service across different locations?

Consistency starts with building a strong foundation, clear systems, well-trained staff, and a shared commitment to quality. Across all our locations, we follow the same standard operating procedures and maintain strict checklists for vehicle maintenance, safety protocols, and daily operations. Our teams are regularly trained and monitored to ensure they uphold the same standards, no matter where they are. We also conduct site visits, gather regular feedback from clients, and stay in constant touch with our teams on the ground. It’s this hands-on approach and attention to detail that help us deliver a seamless experience across the board.

Have there been any moments of feedback from a parent, student, or school that deeply impacted how you see your work?

Definitely. Some of the most impactful lessons came from the early stages of the business, when we received critical feedback. Rather than seeing it as a setback, we took it as an opportunity to improve. That input helped us refine our systems and raise our standards. One piece of advice that stayed with me was to never become complacent—always keep evaluating and evolving. A moment I often recall is when a school principal said, “I never have to worry about transport anymore.” It wasn’t a grand statement, but it spoke volumes about the trust we had built. Feedback like that reminds us of the responsibility we carry and the value of consistency.

Running a demanding business often comes with personal sacrifices. How has your family supported you through the challenges of this journey?

In this line of work, challenges are constant—be it sudden breakdowns, staff shortages, or regulatory changes. During those unpredictable moments, my family’s support has been my foundation. They’ve encouraged me to stay the course during tough phases and have shown patience through long hours and high-pressure situations. More than just emotional support, they’ve given me clarity. When you’re making decisions that impact so many people daily, having a steady, grounding presence matters immensely. Their belief in me and the purpose behind what I do has helped me stay focused, resilient, and committed.

You hold key positions in transport associations like the Kerala Interstate Bus Operators Association and the Bus Operators Confederation of India. How has this exposure shaped your perspective on industry-wide challenges, and do you use those insights to influence your own business decisions?

Being in leadership roles within these associations has given me a much broader view of the transport industry. It’s made me aware of how different the rules, regulations, and taxation systems are across states, what works in one state can be completely different in another. I’ve also seen firsthand some of the key challenges we all face, like driver shortages, regulatory hurdles, and the slow pace of technological adoption in the sector.

At the same time, these roles have helped me build strong networks and stay ahead of industry changes. The insights I gain from discussions with operators across the country often inform how I run my own business. Whether it’s preparing for policy shifts, adopting new technologies, or simply learning from the experiences of others. It keeps me grounded but also forward-looking.

How are emerging technologies like AI shaping the way you manage your transport operations today?

AI is already making a meaningful impact on how we operate at Padikkal Travels. We’ve adopted several smart technologies—AI-based systems help us detect and prevent drunken driving, monitor driver fatigue, and instantly alert us if a driver appears drowsy. GPS integration allows us to optimise routes for better punctuality, while in-bus cameras offer live monitoring to ensure both driver accountability and passenger safety. We also use fuel theft alert systems to curb misuse and enhance operational efficiency. These tools have raised our safety standards, improved reliability, and deepened client trust. In today’s landscape, embracing such innovations isn’t a choice—it’s essential for sustainable growth.

Based on global best practices, what changes would you like to see in India’s school transport system?

I’ve always admired the structured approach seen in countries like Germany and the Netherlands, where school transport is handled with exceptional discipline and care. One standout practice I’d love to see adopted in India is the strict enforcement of road rules around school buses—particularly the rule that prohibits overtaking a bus when children are boarding or disembarking. These countries also have clearly designated zones for pick-up and drop-off, with traffic systems that prioritize student safety. While India has made notable progress, we still lack this level of infrastructure and driver discipline. Adopting such global standards could greatly enhance safety and bring much-needed structure to our school transport system.

Manoj Padikkal with his Family – (From Left) Megha Manoj (Daughter), Madhav Padikkal (Son), Reshmi Manoj (Wife), and Manoj Padikkal (Seated)

Can you share how your family contributes to the business and the role they play in its growth?

My family has been the backbone of this entire journey. My wife, Reshmi Manoj, who holds a postgraduate degree, is a Director at Padikkal Travels and plays a vital role in managing day-to-day operations and ensuring everything runs smoothly behind the scenes. Our daughter, Megha, is also a Director in the company. She has a BA in Economics (Honours) from Christ College, Bengaluru, and recently completed her MA in Public Policy from O.P. Jindal Global University, Delhi. Her academic background adds a unique policy-oriented perspective to the business.

Our son, Madhav, is currently in the 12th grade in Bengaluru, studying arts and humanities. He has already shown great interest in joining the business in the future. As a family, we’ve worked together to build Padikkal Travels into one of the most trusted names in school transport across South India. It’s been a collective journey rooted in shared vision, dedication, and mutual support.

What core mindset do you believe every aspiring entrepreneur should develop?

The most important shift in mindset is understanding that success doesn’t happen overnight. It demands relentless hard work, discipline, and consistency—every single day. Challenges are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines your path.

Even after all these years, there are nights I’m working till 2 a.m., only to wake up again at 4 a.m. to make sure everything is in place. That kind of dedication isn’t optional—it’s what the business requires. Dreaming big is important, but dreams only come true when you back them with unwavering effort and a never-give-up attitude.

From the quiet lanes of Thrissur to the corridors of global recognition, K. Paul Thomas has walked a path few dare to tread—blending finance with faith, business with benevolence, and vision with values. This is the inspiring story of the man behind ESAF, who ignited India’s banking revolution rooted in compassion.

From a Dream to a Nationwide Mission

In 1992, amidst a transformative period in India marked by sweeping economic reforms and the dawn of globalisation, ESAF was launched as a non-governmental organisation (NGO). Just a few years later, in 1995—when the concept of “microfinance” was still largely unfamiliar—a visionary young man from Kerala, K. Paul Thomas, dared to dream differently about finance. This led to the birth of the Micro Enterprises Development (MED) Division under ESAF.

While many were fixated on building profit-driven empires, K. Paul Thomas chose a path less traveled—one centered on empowering people. His focus was on the often-overlooked segment of India’s population: women living in some of the most underdeveloped and remote parts of the country, long excluded from formal financial systems.

At the heart of ESAF’s humble beginnings was a powerful vision: to uplift communities not through handouts or charity, but by enabling dignified access to financial services. “The poor don’t need handouts. They need an opportunity to prove themselves,” he asserted.

Today, after more than three decades, ESAF has transformed from a grassroots initiative into a fully licensed Small Finance Bank. With a presence in over 780 locations across 24 states and 2 union territories, it proudly serves more than 9.4 million customers. Yet, despite its exponential growth, ESAF has never strayed from its founding spirit. It continues to operate not merely as a bank, but as a mission-driven movement grounded in social purpose.

A Pioneer Ahead of His Time

Long before the Kudumbashree movement made waves in Kerala, Paul Thomas had already introduced the idea of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and joint liability models as powerful tools for transformation. Inspired by Nobel Laureate Prof. Muhammad Yunus and the Grameen Bank model in Bangladesh, he adapted it for Indian realities.

His earliest steps involved going door-to-door in remote villages, forming neighbourhood women’s groups, encouraging savings habits, and offering microloans for home-based businesses. It was hard work, but it worked.

ESAF became one of the earliest proponents of microfinance in India, and Paul Thomas, its unassuming evangelist.

K. Paul Thomas (Managing Director & CEO, ESAF Small Finance Bank)

A Bank Where Lives Matter

When ESAF Small Finance Bank received its banking licence in 2017, it made history as the first bank from Kerala to be licensed after independence. That moment was a culmination of years of persistent work under the sun and the shade—building trust, reaching the unreached, and nurturing a network of believers in inclusive growth.

Today, ESAF Bank stands tall not just in numbers, but in values. Unlike traditional banks, its focus has always been clear: financial inclusion, livelihood support, and community transformation.

Under Paul Thomas’s guidance, the organisation expanded its offerings beyond microloans. It set up leadership training programmes for women empowerment, training programmes for rural entrepreneurship, created market linkages for artisan products, and facilitated access to government schemes. This integrated model became a lifeline for thousands trying to escape the cycle of poverty, and it also helped sustain the ecosystem he created.

His leadership drew investors with a conscience—organisations like Opportunity International (Australia) and Oikocredit of the Netherlands—who backed his dream with dollars.

A Banker Who Serves

Ask anyone who knows him and they’ll vouch that Paul Thomas isn’t just a banker. He’s a servant leader. The term isn’t just a buzzword for him; it defines his ethos. His approach to governance is bottom-up, empowering those at the grassroots to shape their own destinies and escape the iron grip of poverty.

His belief? Leadership is not about being in charge. It’s about taking care of those in your charge. He lives this every day, not only in the policies ESAF adopts, but also in how he leads his teams with empathy, trust, and an unwavering sense of purpose.

Over the years, many prestigious laurels have come his way as signs of recognition for his visionary leadership and social impact. These include the Atal Pension Yojana Big Believers Award 3.0 for the Best Performing MD and CEO, the Circle of Excellence Exemplary Award of Par Excellence instituted by the PFRDA, and the Entrepreneur of the Year Award by TiE Kerala. He was conferred with the TMA Management Excellence Award and the Chamber of Commerce Award. He also received the Icon of Sustainability Award.

Furthermore, he was feted with the FE Pillar of the BFSI Industry Award at the Financial Express Modern BFSI Summit—an acknowledgement of his enduring influence in reshaping banking with purpose and integrity.

Paul Thomas was also recognised as the CEO with HR Orientation at the World HRD Congress in 2022.

Rooted in Values, Recognised Worldwide

As ESAF steadily expanded its presence across India, it remained firmly anchored to its founding principle—that banking should be just, fair, and inclusive. This unwavering belief found resonance far beyond national borders. Under the leadership of K. Paul Thomas, ESAF became the first Indian bank to join the Global Alliance for Banking on Values (GABV), a global network of institutions dedicated to ethical and sustainable banking practices.

But ESAF’s global alignment didn’t stop there. It also joined the World Fair Trade Organisation, strengthening its pledge to uphold social justice on an international scale.

Such dedication to purpose did not go unnoticed. ESAF Small Finance Bank was named a finalist at the prestigious European Microfinance Award not once, but twice—first in 2014 as a Non-Banking Financial Company (NBFC), and again in 2018 as a full-fledged bank.

These recognitions weren’t just about innovation; they were acknowledgments of real, measurable impact.

K. Paul Thomas (Managing Director & CEO, ESAF Small Finance Bank)

Organising the Unorganised

One of Paul Thomas’s most notable contributions has been his relentless focus on the unorganised sector. In a country where informal workers form the majority, yet remain invisible to formal institutions, he saw a gap—and an opportunity. Through ESAF, he brought these communities into the fold—not just as borrowers, but as stakeholders in development.

Skill training programmes were rolled out, and artisans were given branding and marketing support. His initiatives also lent a helping hand to farmers in accessing fair trade markets. And above all, individuals were given the dignity of being seen, heard, and supported. This holistic approach created not just financial inclusion but also social empowerment. He deserves applause for being a bridge builder between the unorganised sector and the formal economy, thereby empowering countless individuals and communities.

Wearing Many Hats With Elan

While ESAF is his flagship legacy, K. Paul Thomas wears many hats with panache. He formerly served as the President of the Thrissur Management Association, and the Chairman of CII Kerala Chapter. Currently, he is the Chairman of Sa-Dhan, a Self-Regulatory Organisation for community development finance institutions.

In each role, he continues to champion the cause of inclusive development—ensuring that financial systems evolve not just for profit, but for people and the planet. Although his academic background gave him the technical grounding, it was his values and vision that truly shaped his legacy.

Awards Are Great, Impact Is Better

Under Paul Thomas’s leadership, ESAF Small Finance Bank has not just grown—it has thrived on values. In 2018, the bank attained Scheduled Commerce Bank status. The institution has garnered numerous accolades that highlight its trailblazing efforts in the financial sector. Among its most notable recognitions is the prestigious title of Rising Brand of Asia 2021–2022 by BARC Asia, which acknowledged ESAF’s exceptional growth and visibility in the Asian market. The Leadership Capital and Makers of Excellence Award, instituted by the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority (PFRDA), further validated the bank’s commitment to ethical governance and impactful leadership. Additionally, ESAF received an Honourable Mention at the Global SME Finance Awards 2021, organised by the International Finance Corporation, placing it among the most innovative and effective institutions supporting small and medium enterprises worldwide. Later in 2023, he steered ESAF Small Finance Bank to successfully launch its IPO, which was oversubscribed 77 times.

Yet, for Paul Thomas, such recognitions, while meaningful, are not the ultimate goal. He views them as encouraging affirmations rather than endpoints. His deepest sense of fulfilment stems not from trophies or titles, but from the real and lasting changes in the lives of those ESAF serves. For him, success lies in human stories—of resilience, dignity, and empowerment. He believes the true measure of success is transformation—not balance sheets.

K. Paul Thomas (Managing Director & CEO, ESAF Small Finance Bank)

A Story Still Being Written

At 62, with decades of impact behind him, K. Paul Thomas remains as committed and passionate as ever. He believes India’s next big revolution is not digital or industrial—but social.

“The marginalised must be brought to the mainstream,” he often says, “not through force or charity, but through dignity and opportunity.” In a world obsessed with unicorns and billion-dollar valuations, Paul Thomas stands as a gentle giant—building an empire of empathy, trust, and values.

His journey is a testament to what happens when business meets compassion, when banking becomes a vehicle for justice, and when a single individual chooses to walk the path less taken—with courage, clarity, and commitment.

A Name You Can Trust

Paul Thomas is more than the founder of a bank. He is the founder of a movement of trust. He believed in the poor when no one else did. He brought dignity to development. And he proved that the most sustainable business model is one rooted in humanity.

As India moves forward into a future of rapid change, leaders like him remind us of the timeless values that truly move the world—compassion, courage, and community.

What propelled the shift from the banking profession to entrepreneurship, and how did you overcome the challenges?

Moving from the structured realm of the banking sector to entrepreneurship was driven by a profound longing for autonomy, influence, and the opportunity to follow my passion for innovation and sustainability. While my time in banking provided me with valuable insights, I felt a strong urge to chart my own course and make a significant impact in a swiftly changing environment.

The journey from being a banking professional to a business leader was marked by numerous challenges. Adapting to the dynamic and unpredictable nature of entrepreneurship demanded a shift in mindset, embracing ambiguity, and being comfortable with risk and uncertainty. Additionally, acquiring new skills beyond finance, such as product development and team management, required continuous learning, seeking mentorship, and surrounding myself with diverse talents.

S Dhillon, CTO

Establishing credibility, building networks, and securing funding were formidable hurdles as well. It took perseverance, compelling storytelling, and demonstrating market potential to gain traction in the entrepreneurial ecosystem. However, through resilience, relentless focus on our vision, and a supportive team, we overcame these obstacles, learning from failures, and remaining agile to seize opportunities. Despite the challenges, the journey has been immensely rewarding. The chance to build something impactful, drive positive change, and stay true to our values has made every hurdle worthwhile.

What challenges have you faced in introducing ‘Made in India’ electric vehicles and how have you addressed them?

Introducing ‘Made in India’ electric vehicles (EVs) has been a journey characterized by distinctive challenges, yet our approach has been defined by resolve, creativity, and an unwavering dedication to sustainable mobility. Initially, the shortage of sufficient charging infrastructure presented a notable obstacle. To tackle this issue, we established collaborations with government bodies and utility companies, expediting the rollout of charging stations across the country. Furthermore, we made significant investments in our network of fast-charging booths, guaranteeing convenient accessibility for our customers and enhancing confidence in the adoption of EVs.

Building consumer awareness and fostering widespread adoption of EVs proved another significant challenge. We tackled this through extensive marketing and awareness campaigns, emphasizing the myriad benefits of electric mobility, including cost savings, environmental sustainability, and superior performance. Incentives and subsidies were also offered to make EV purchases more accessible, catalysing interest among a broader audience and driving market growth.

Furthermore, ensuring a robust supply chain, navigating regulatory compliance, and staying abreast of technological advancements were paramount. By collaborating closely with local suppliers, engaging with regulatory authorities, and investing in R&D, we’ve established a resilient supply chain, maintained regulatory compliance, and remained at the forefront of EV innovation. Despite the challenges, we view each obstacle as an opportunity for growth and innovation, confident in our ability to drive the transition towards a sustainable future of mobility, both in India and beyond.

Sustainability is a core component of your business model. What specific practices does Ryoto Electrix implement to promote sustainable development?

Sustainability lies at the heart of Ryoto Electrix’s business model, influencing every facet of our operations, products, and partnerships. Our primary focus revolves around electric mobility solutions, where we design and promote electric vehicles powered by clean energy sources, significantly reducing reliance on fossil fuels and combating air pollution. This commitment to eco-friendly transportation not only contributes to a healthier environment but also aligns with our mission to drive sustainable development.

Aligned with our electric vehicle production, we seamlessly incorporate renewable energy solutions like solar and wind power into our infrastructure. By utilizing clean energy to drive our operations, we not only diminish our carbon footprint but also showcase our steadfast commitment to embracing renewable energy. This dual strategy of manufacturing eco-conscious vehicles and sustaining our operations with renewable sources underscores our comprehensive dedication to environmental stewardship.

How do you envision the future of electric vehicles and renewable energy in India?

The future of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy in India holds tremendous promise, driven by a combination of technological advancements, favourable government policies, and growing environmental consciousness among consumers. I envision a landscape where EVs become increasingly prevalent on Indian roads, propelled by advancements in technology that make them more affordable and convenient for the average consumer. With the government’s ambitious incentives and policies aimed at promoting EV adoption, coupled with a burgeoning infrastructure for charging stations, EVs are poised to revolutionize the transportation sector and significantly reduce carbon emissions.

Renewable energy is set to play a central role in India’s quest for energy sustainability and security. The country has made significant strides in harnessing solar and wind power, with ambitious targets for expanding renewable energy capacity in the coming years. As technology continues to improve and costs decline, renewable energy sources will become increasingly competitive with traditional fossil fuels, offering a cleaner, more sustainable alternative. This transition to renewable energy not only reduces India’s dependence on imported fossil fuels but also creates new opportunities for job creation and economic growth in the renewable energy sector.

However, challenges such as intermittency, grid integration, and storage capabilities must be addressed to fully unlock the potential of renewable energy in India. Collaborative efforts between government, industry, and academia will be essential in overcoming these hurdles and realising the full benefits of a clean energy future. With concerted action and continued innovation, India is well-positioned to lead the way toward a greener, more sustainable future powered by electric vehicles and renewable energy sources.

In terms of policy, what changes would you like to see to better support the growth of electric vehicles and renewable energy in India?

To bolster the expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) and renewable energy in India, several pivotal policy adjustments are imperative. Foremost, the implementation of robust financial incentives and subsidies is crucial to catalyze demand for EVs. These incentives might encompass tax exemptions, purchase subsidies for EVs, and incentives for manufacturers to localize EV production. Similarly, providing subsidies and incentives for renewable energy initiatives, like solar and wind power, would incentivize increased adoption and investment in clean energy infrastructure, nurturing a more sustainable energy landscape.

Investing in a widespread charging infrastructure network is critical to alleviate range anxiety and facilitate the transition to electric vehicles. Government policies should prioritise the development of charging stations in urban areas, along highways, and in public spaces. Incentives could be provided to businesses to install charging stations, and regulations could mandate new construction projects to include EV charging facilities, ensuring accessibility and convenience for EV owners.

Additionally, increased funding for research and development (R&D) in EV technology and renewable energy solutions is vital for innovation and cost reduction. Government-supported R&D initiatives can accelerate the development of advanced battery technologies, improve charging efficiency, and drive down the cost of renewable energy generation, fostering technological advancements that propel India towards a more sustainable energy future. Through these policy changes, India can create an enabling environment for the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and renewable energy, driving economic growth, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and enhancing energy security for the future.

What role will electric vehicles play in India’s goal of reducing carbon emissions in the next decade?

Electric vehicles are poised to play a pivotal role in India’s ambitious goal of reducing carbon emissions over the next decade, particularly in the transportation sector. Given that transportation is a significant contributor to India’s carbon footprint, transitioning to EVs offers a promising pathway to decarbonise this critical sector. With zero tailpipe emissions, EVs represent a cleaner and greener alternative to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles, effectively reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions associated with transportation activities.

Furthermore, the integration of renewable energy sources into India’s energy mix presents a synergistic opportunity with the adoption of electric vehicles. India has been rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity, particularly in solar and wind power. EVs can serve as a vital demand-side management tool, enabling the efficient utilisation of renewable energy by charging during periods of high generation. This integration not only maximises the utilisation of clean energy resources but also further reduces carbon emissions from the transportation sector, contributing significantly to India’s carbon reduction goals.

Moreover, supportive government policies, technological advancements, and increasing consumer awareness are expected to accelerate the adoption of EVs in India. Initiatives such as subsidies, incentives, and regulatory mandates aimed at promoting electric mobility are already gaining traction, driving consumer interest and investment in the EV market. As EV technology continues to improve and costs decline, coupled with the expansion of charging infrastructure, the adoption rate of electric vehicles is anticipated to rise, leading to substantial emission reductions and positioning India as a leader in sustainable transportation solutions.

Bussiness

In the realm of law, where the scales of justice often tip between legal technicalities and human compassion, Advocate AP Vasavan of the High Court of Kerala stands out as a beacon of integrity, fairness, and empathy. With a career spanning 23 years, Vasavan has carved a niche for himself as a legal luminary who places humanity, justice, and honesty on par with the letter of the law. AP Vasavan’s remarkable journey, marked by over 10,000 cases, including high-profile sessions and POCSO cases, underscores his unwavering commitment to truth and fairness.

Early Life and Education:
AP Vasavan’s early life in Palakkal, Thrissur district, shaped his values and set the foundation for his illustrious career. Born to Prabhakaran and Radha, he is the eldest of three children. After completing his schooling and college education in his hometown, AP Vasavan pursued a degree in law from BMS Law College in Bengaluru. It was his father’s dream that he enter the legal profession, a desire that guided him towards a career in law.

Career Highlights:
Since embarking on his legal journey in 2001, AP Vasavan has been a steadfast advocate for the marginalized and downtrodden, striving to ensure that justice is not only served but also perceived to be served. One of the hallmarks of AP Vasavan’s career is his ability to navigate complex and challenging cases with unwavering determination and integrity. Among these, the Thrissur POCSO case stands out as a testament to his dedication to uncovering the truth. Despite the odds stacked against his client, AP Vasavan’s perseverance and commitment to justice ultimately led to the exoneration of the accused, shedding light on the importance of diligence and determination in the pursuit of truth.
In addition to his legal practice, AP Vasavan is a vocal advocate for reform within the judicial system. He believes that the introduction of new statutes, such as the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Samhita, Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam, will significantly enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the legal system. Furthermore, he advocates for the expansion of privacy laws to protect vulnerable individuals, particularly in cases involving sexual assault and harassment.

Opinions on Legal Education:
Restructuring the legal education system solely within Kerala is not practical since laws are uniform across India and not limited to any specific state. Historically, Kerala lacked private legal education institutions, creating a gap in its educational landscape. However, this gap has been addressed with the emergence of private sector institutions, offering students the freedom to choose their preferred legal studies institutions.
Despite these improvements, the legal education system still has several shortcomings. For aspiring lawyers, understanding court procedures requires more than just theoretical knowledge; it demands practical insight into current practices. Similar to other professional courses, legal studies should emphasize practical experience alongside theoretical learning.
India’s extensive legal framework, comprising over 3000 Acts, makes it unrealistic for law students to master every law entirely. Thus, the modern educational approach should focus on imparting knowledge of key laws and practical skills for navigating legal challenges. While my own legal education lacked a strong emphasis on practical application, there has been a noticeable shift towards integrating practical elements into the curriculum. Emphasizing hands-on learning and practical training within legal studies would represent a significant advancement.

Qualities of a Good Lawyer:
To succeed in the legal profession, a lawyer must possess several essential qualities. Firstly, a comprehensive understanding of the law is paramount, along with staying abreast of the latest judgments from the High Court and Supreme Court, as well as any legislative updates. Secondly, integrity and unwavering honesty towards clients are indispensable virtues. Thirdly, a diligent approach to case preparation is essential, involving thorough research and consultation with experts on complex legal matters.
Unfortunately, there has been a troubling trend of prioritizing financial gain over ethical principles in recent times. However, drawing from my 23 years of experience in the legal field, I advocate for a steadfast commitment to honesty and diligence in one’s practice, as financial success naturally follows from maintaining professional integrity. By adhering to these principles, issues such as corruption and favoritism can be significantly reduced.
Furthermore, conducting legal proceedings in public rather than private spaces contributes to upholding the principles of transparency and fairness in the legal system. By ensuring that legal processes are accessible to all and conducted openly, trust and confidence in the judicial system can be strengthened.

Kerala High Court’s Landmark Ruling
In a significant ruling by the esteemed Kerala High Court, a case unfolded where a father accused the mother of sexually abusing their child. Presiding over the matter, Judge Shircy not only granted bail to the mother but also mandated a specialized team to conduct an investigation. This proactive step, under the High Court’s supervision, ultimately uncovered the mother’s innocence and revealed the father’s concocted allegations.
This case stands as a poignant illustration of the misuse of the POCSO Act, shedding light on the potential for revealing truth amidst unfounded accusations. It emphasizes the imperative of holding individuals accountable for baseless claims, ensuring the integrity of the legal system. However, it also invites contemplation on the appropriateness of judicial intervention in certain societal matters, underscoring the nuanced balance between judicial oversight and the autonomy of other societal institutions.

Reflections on Legal Mercy and Reform
In the case of Govindachami, the Supreme Court’s decision to commute his death sentence to a lesser punishment showcases an instance of legal mercy. Discussions surrounding his transformation during his time in prison have been sparked, emphasizing the complexities within the legal system. However, it’s crucial to recognize that the primary aim of the legal system is to ensure that severe crimes receive appropriate sanctions.
He firmly believes that India’s legal framework stands among the most precise globally and is poised for further improvement through ongoing reforms. The guiding principle of our judiciary is to prevent the wrongful punishment of the innocent, even if it means that the guilty might go unpunished. This doctrine is internationally recognized and upheld.
It would be inaccurate to suggest that the Indian legal system is inherently flawed. Like any system, it is subject to continual improvements. Originating from British legal practices, India’s legal system has served effectively for centuries. Yet, to address contemporary challenges, it requires updates and reforms. The introduction of new legal reforms holds promise in enhancing the effectiveness and fairness of the system

Challenging Perceptions in Legal Proceedings
Our understanding of legal outcomes is often shaped by media reports, which may not offer a complete or accurate portrayal of the case at hand. Take, for instance, the situation involving actor Dileep. My insight into the details surpasses the media’s depiction, indicating that his arrest and continued detention may diverge from the widely circulated narrative.
Similarly, in the Highrich case garnering media attention, reports allege fraud amounting to Rs 1,200 crores, with Rs 600 crore frozen in accounts. However, upon closer examination, no client has filed a complaint, suggesting a disconnect between media claims and actual circumstances.
Another striking example is the case involving a bishop accused of rape. Despite media reports, a review of the case file and judgment reveals inaccuracies, ultimately leading to the bishop’s innocence.
These instances underscore the importance of basing legal judgments on case-specific details rather than being influenced by potentially misleading media representations.

Strategies for Timely Resolutions
One of the most pressing challenges within our legal system is the prolonged duration of case resolutions. Addressing this issue requires comprehensive reforms within the legal framework. Ongoing and forthcoming reforms in criminal and civil law aim to tackle this issue head-on. Initiatives are already in motion to expedite cases involving non-residents, and he advocate for a more aggressive expansion of Lok Adalats and Mediation Centers.
With the introduction of new legislation, disputes between individuals can be resolved through arbitration by mutually agreed-upon arbitrators or legally recognized mediators. This approach has the potential to significantly reduce the caseload in courts by encouraging resolution before escalating to formal court settings.
Regarding the pace of legal proceedings, the current system’s requirement for the submission of a counterclaim within 30 days of filing a suit seems reasonable for organizing case documents. However, compared to this, responses to RTI requests alone can take over 30 days, indicating the logistical and technical complexities involved in expediting case resolutions.
Furthermore, it’s crucial to acknowledge the rights of all parties involved in a legal matter. Defendants must have the opportunity to defend themselves adequately. Rushing judgment could deprive defendants of this chance, necessitating time for preparation and submission of relevant documents.
Presently, delays do not appear to stem from intentional stalling. To meet the growing need for legal adjudication, a slight increase in the number of courts, alongside bolstering Dispute Resolution Centers and Adalats, could lead to a reduction in the backlog of cases.

The Kerala High Court’s Social Advocacy
The Kerala High Court has emerged as a proactive force in reshaping societal norms and addressing contemporary social issues. With remarkable responsiveness, the court swiftly intervenes in matters directly impacting the public, demonstrating a keen awareness of pressing social concerns. From ensuring public safety by tackling issues like the misuse of air horns in vehicles and the lack of adequate drainage systems to prevent waterlogging, to taking decisive action against instances of political violence and murders, the court has shown a firm commitment to upholding law and order.
Beyond its traditional role, the Kerala High Court has boldly extended its influence to matters of governance, challenging undue taxation policies and advocating for the rights and interests of citizens. By basing its interventions on newspaper reports and engaging with issues that extend beyond the courtroom, the court showcases a broader perspective on justice, one that actively addresses societal dynamics and fosters a more equitable and just society for all.

Advice for Young Lawyers
Drawing from years of experience in the legal profession, he offers two essential pieces of advice to aspiring lawyers keen on upholding professional ethics. Firstly, it is imperative to master the fundamental rules of law, encompassing statutes such as the Evidence Act, IPC, CrPC, CPC, and Civil Rules of Practice. Continuous updates and familiarity with these statutes are crucial to remaining current and effective in legal practice.
Secondly, aspiring lawyers should prioritize the diligent observation of court proceedings. This involves not only accurate comprehension of legal proceedings but also appropriate action in response. Central to maintaining professional integrity is the unwavering commitment to honesty and integrity when interacting with clients. Approach every client interaction with the utmost respect and reverence, recognizing the trust placed in you as their legal representative. By adhering to these principles, young lawyers can establish a solid foundation for ethical legal practice and contribute positively to the legal profession.

Insights from Ayyappan Pillai Sir
Balancing a demanding professional career with personal life can be a daunting task, but a chance encounter with Ayyappan Pillai Sir, a revered senior lawyer, proved transformative in navigating this delicate equilibrium. His invaluable advice, shared during the rise of ubiquitous mobile phones, advocated for a simple yet profound practice: switching off my mobile device from 9 PM to 9 AM. By dedicating this time exclusively to family matters, Pillai Sir emphasized the paramount importance of nurturing relationships over the relentless pursuit of wealth and recognition. Recognizing that true fulfillment stems from meaningful connections with loved ones, Pillai Sir’s guidance resonated deeply, prompting a steadfast commitment to spending early mornings with my children, aiding them in their school preparations. This deliberate investment in family time not only fostered a profound bond and affection but also imbued life’s achievements with deeper significance.
Inspired by Pillai Sir’s wisdom, I shared this ethos with a judge grappling with the demands of a taxing case, revealing my role as a dedicated father of four. To my astonishment, the judge publicly acknowledged me as his mentor in open court, attributing the mantra I shared to the enrichment of his own family life. Despite the demands of my professional responsibilities, I maintain a firm boundary, ensuring that family life remains sacred and untainted by work-related intrusions. To this day, my family accompanies me on trips unrelated to work, but I steadfastly uphold the separation between personal and professional realms, inviting neither partners to my home nor allowing family matters to encroach upon my professional duties.

Family and Passion
At the heart of his success lies the unwavering support of his family, particularly his wife, Advocate Prasara Vasavan, who serves as a cornerstone in both his personal and professional life. Prasara’s achievements extend beyond the legal realm; she excels as an athlete, showcasing her talent in the women’s IPL cricket and emerging victorious in lawyers’ women’s shuttle tournaments. Her versatility extends further into the realms of modeling and the arts, where her prowess shines brightly. Blessed with three children—Vedit, Sahasr, and Devanshi—their family stands as a testament to the harmonious balance between career pursuits and familial responsibilities.
His journey into the legal field was not merely a career choice but a realization of a lifelong dream instilled in him by his father. His own tenure in a legal office, preceding his employment in banking, fueled his aspiration to see his eldest son follow in his footsteps. This familial legacy nurtured within him a deep-rooted passion for law, evolving over time from a childhood interest into a profound calling. Guided by his father’s aspirations, he embarked on a path in law driven by a sense of purpose and dedication to upholding justice.
