A coalition of 25 Western countries, including Britain, France, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, has called on Israel to end its war in Gaza immediately and condemned the “inhumane killing” of Palestinians—particularly the deaths of over 800 civilians near food distribution sites. In a joint statement, the foreign ministers criticized Israel’s “drip feeding of aid,” describing it as a “dangerous” model that undermines stability and strips Gazans of their dignity.

The nations also expressed grave concern over the Israeli-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), which has replaced the U.N.-led aid distribution network. While the United States and Israel support the GHF’s approach, critics, including the U.N., have warned that it bypasses humanitarian standards and puts civilians at risk. The countries behind the statement urged Israel to lift aid restrictions and allow the safe, unrestricted operation of humanitarian agencies and the United Nations.

Israel dismissed the statement as “disconnected from reality” and accused the international community of ignoring Hamas’s role in prolonging the conflict. As diplomatic tensions rose, Israeli tanks advanced further into Deir al-Balah, intensifying the 21-month war that has killed over 59,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health authorities. Meanwhile, the U.K. announced a new £60 million ($80.9 million) humanitarian aid package for Gaza, signaling growing international pressure on Israel to change course.

The Munich Rule emphasizes engagement and interaction over lecturing or ignoring one another. However, at the 60th Munich Security Conference (MSC), attention was drawn to the absence of two influential figures: former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. Their potential impacts on the transatlantic relationship and global stability were significant topics of discussion, especially in light of Putin’s actions regarding Alexei Navalny and Ukraine.

The conference reflected a world characterized by increasing confrontation and diminishing cooperation, as noted by EU’s Josep Borrell. The theme of “lose-lose” dynamics pervaded discussions, highlighting the deepening geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainties.

David Miliband, CEO of the International Rescue Committee, described the conference as emblematic of a disorderly world marked by impunity, exemplified by Navalny’s situation. Navalny’s wife, Yulia Navalnaya, made a powerful statement condemning Putin’s regime, underscoring the personal stakes involved in global politics.

Russia and Iran’s absence from the conference signaled a lack of interest in meaningful dialogue, contrasting with past confrontational speeches by their representatives. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stressed the urgency of Western support amid ongoing conflict, especially with US assistance facing obstacles in Congress.

The Israel-Gaza conflict highlighted the international community’s call for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid, but Israeli delegates emphasized the strategic necessity of their actions against Hamas.

The conference, with its record attendance, showcased the diverse array of global stakeholders grappling with shifting notions of security. While historically a platform for diplomacy, this year’s event primarily focused on dialogue and assessment amid heightened global tensions.

Mainz, the Bundesliga club, has suspended Dutch winger Anwar El Ghazi from both training and games due to a social media post concerning the Israel-Gaza conflict. The club deemed the post “unacceptable” and emphasized that El Ghazi had taken a stance on the ongoing conflict that did not align with the club’s values.

El Ghazi, who joined Mainz this summer after stints at Aston Villa and Everton, has participated in three league games since his transfer.

In response to the incident, Bayern Munich has reportedly planned to hold a detailed meeting with full-back Noussair Mazraoui after the player shared a pro-Palestinian video on Instagram.

Similarly, French prosecutors are investigating Nice defender Youcef Atal for allegedly posting an antisemitic video on social media regarding the Israel-Gaza situation. Both Mainz and Bayern Munich have been contacted for further comment on the matter.
