Italy approves referendum seeking to reduce strength by third
Italy has cleared a referendum seeking to reduce the strength of the parliament by a third.
As many as 70 per cent of the electorate of the country has voted in favour of the referendum.
Once the new regulation comes to effect, the strength of the parliament will be reduced to at least 400.
The present strength of the parliament is not less than 634.
The referendum has the support of the Five Star Movement, which is an important member of the political coalition which rules the country.
The new development has come shortly after the regional election which saw the decline of the strength of the ruling rightist political parties.
Italy has lost many lives owing to the present disease outbreak. It is one of the worst affected countries in the continent of Europe.
At present, it is unclear whether the present development has any serious political implication.
Anyway, the development may help to reduce the chance of the spread of the disease among the lawmakers.
The same policy is expected to be implemented in the Senate.
If this development is proved helpful, many countries in this part of the world is expected to copy that policy.
