The Nagorno-Karabakh War is the most brutal war the continent of Europe has witnessed in its recent history.

The battle was between Armenia and Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh is a region located between these two countries. The region was controlled by ethnic Armenians, though was internationally recognized as a part of Azerbaijan. The conflict began, when Azerbaijan launched a military move to establish its recognised claim over the territory.

Azerbaijan had the support of Turkey and even the European Union.

When the war reached its final stage, Armenia, which enjoyed the indirect support of Russia, was at a losing end.

Generally speaking, Azerbaijan has won the war by establishing its authority of the majority of the land which were under the control of ethnic Armenians.

But, actually, the real winner is not Azerbaijan and Turkey; it is Russia.

It is Russia which has brokered a peace deal between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

What the development points at is the failure of the European Union – which is considered as the most powerful organisation based in Europe.

In reality, Russia has won where the European Union has miserably failed. What the incident exposes is the weakness of the union, which boats of its unity and stability, and is known for its peace-making framework.

Hong Kong is a part of China now. Earlier, it was a region controlled by the United Kingdom. It was the west which turned the region a true trade hub.

In the recent past, the trade hub was handed over to China. The process was backed by an agreement Beijing reached with London. The agreement assured that China would protect the democratic values and practices the hub inherited from the UK.

Unfortunately, since the transfer of the region from the UK to China, the latter has been systematically dismantling every thing the region inherited, including the democratic values and practices.

The action, naturally, has received serious resistance. The city has witnessed numerous protests against China’s aggression.

As part of China’s strategy, it has recently imposed some laws to suppress those who have voiced their disagreement against the Chinese action.

China last week dismissed the law-making body of Hong Kong.

It seems that the Hong Kong issue has struck a peak point. The west, especially the United Kingdom and the United States, has openly criticised the Chinese policy. It has sent an ultimatum to the Communist Country of China to withdraw its anti-democratic actions.

It is yet to be seen how the things will evolve. China has not yet commented about the new development.

In a move which is regarded as highly crucial, the Russian Parliament has cleared a bill, which offers immunity to Russian Presidents and their families.

The move has been questioned by numerous political activists. Renowned political activist Alexei Navalny has asked why does the Russian President need an immunity at this juncture.

The law implies even if Russian President Vladimir Putin steps down from the top post he cannot be prosecuted by the Russian government in any circumstance.

The bill is a part of the constitutional amendments which was approved by the Russian population few months before.

Mr. Putin at present has absolute control over the Russian Parliament. The Parliament is dominated by the supporters of the Russian President.

The Russian President is supposed to step down from the post in the year 2024. A new amendment allows him to contest in at least two more elections.

As the possibility of the emergence of a new Presidential figure is less, the possibility of the re-election of the Russian President to the top post is very high.

Mr. Putin is not less than 68-year-old. He has been in power since the year 2000.

The new bill however has generated fresh speculations about the political future of the Russian dictator.
